1988 1.8 Carb Hydraulic tappet noise - mrmender
Got mrs mm's Scirrocco (88 1.8 Carb model) it's been off the road for 6 months started up no bother but 1 of the tappets continued to rattle. In the past they would rattle on startup then stop. I ran the engine for 1hr but it continued to rattle any quick cures for this one?

when sitting for a while it usually takes a ahile for the oil to get bak around the engine. It could just go away after a few days of driving or you may need to replace the tappet or clean it out.

When i replaced the head on my polo g40 the tappets were really bad as the head hadnt been used for about 3months after a fay of driving the were fine and quietened down a treat.

Also a noisey tappet isnt too much to worry about really it wont do ant damage unless it gets really really bad.

The oil needs to get well hot.

I've heard that a dose of Auto tranny fluid is good to clean up the tappets, not tried it on my VW but it cured clogged rings on my BM (just a temporary dose - say 0.5 litre - as it thins the oil quite a bit)

at the end of the day clean oil is best for the hydro tappets. My EZ is on 172k and the tappets are just fine (\gloat)
