1997 2.8 petrol auto - sudden jumps - asderella
when cold it tends to move heavily then suddenly as you are trying to drive it would hesitate then a sudden jump could anybody tell me what is wrong. I have been told there is a massive oil leak in the gear box but I am wondering if it is a massive oil leak can it still be driven and for how long. when it is warm it hardly does it.

The gearbox is already too low on fluid and is struggling to keep enough control pressure to even operate the clutches; if you try and drive it like that you will write-off the £2,000 auto-box - and thus the car - at one go.

If it's got a transmission leak, get it fixed.

I was told that it would cost £800 just to open the gear box and to repair it it would cost £3000 yet we were told the car is only worth £2000 so they advised us that it is not worth repairing. If I topped it uo every so often would that help till I buy a new car its a shame it has only done 69000 miles.

If it is a massive leak should it not show on the ground or is it internal and will not show.

If an auto-box is leaking, it should drip on to the ground, get sucked into the engine, or contaminate the coolant. Who diagnosed this leak?

You should be able to get an automatic transmission specialist to fit a re-con for around £2000.

Topping-up is a complex procedure best left to the initiated.

thank you for your reply I was wondering if you could advise me where to take it like a reliable garage to fit a reconditioned gearbox and is it to late now I mean have we done too much damage to the car by leaving it for this long as in six months.

Fluid levels (brake, washer, coolant, engine oil, transmission fluid etc) should be checked WEEKLY and topped up if necessary - for all cars - you have been doing that haven't you?

Yes, I am having a go a you, asderella, but you're not alone - many drivers theses days just don't bother with simple, non-technical, checks and then wonder why an expensive fault occurs - my own son is just as bad and thats not for want of trying, believe me!

I took it to ford dealers that is where it was diagnosed.

Ring around your local auto gearbox specialists - Ford dealers hate these, don't understand them and don't want to work on them; they're just a Volkswagen in drag.
