yr 2000 - Service......problems to watch for???? - telecaster
Hi everyone, my daughter just bought a 2000 Nissan Micra which makes it a K11...I think.

Car was put through the mot yesterday with no problems, but want to give it a "going over" myself all the same......

What type of oil should i use?????would semi synth be ok.......ie: its easy to get hold of and cheap......ish.

Any particular areas I should check? I know the front crossmember is prone to rust so will check that out.

Also is the Micra fussy about oil filters ...should I buy genuine Nissan or will spurious do?

All advice greatly appreciated and taken aboard!

Recommended oils by Nissan is 10w30 or 5w30.

The engine has the bypass valve in the block instead of the oil filter, any quality oil filter will do.

Apart from the front cross member areas such as the mudtrap between the front wheel arch and front door bottoms are worth looking at.

Make sure power steering oil is clean and is changed more often than Nissan recommends as the power steering pumps can go noisy - it takes dexron II type automatic transmission fluid.

Try Nissan dealer for service parts. They are comparable and sometimes cheaper than pattern parts.

Not sure on the Micra but I was recommended to only use Nissan anti-freeze on my Primera.
It's around £3/litre.

Open the front doors wide and gently hose the mud and leaves out.

Definately do check the cross member as they are very prone to rusting through.
Part is about £30 but labour will be around £200.
I replaced one on my Mrs 98 Micra. It took me a whole weekend.

"any quality oil filter will do". Yes, if you are not bothered about how long the car lasts!

Buy genuine Nissan filters. It is unwise to try and save a bit of money by buying a cheap filter.

The bypass, referred to above, is to ensure some oil will still flow when the filter is choked up and should have been changed long ago!

Also don't try and squeeze as many miles as you can out of an oil change. Change it a bit early.

There are many articles on oil. Here is one: www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

Also use Nissan antifreeze. It is not just the antifreeze part, it is the rest of the formulation that is made to suit the car parts, like not having the internals corrode.

For things like some of the parts, you can shop around as long as you know what you are doing.

Hence why I used the word "quality".
Buzbee, have you ever cut open a Nissan Micra european market oilfilter? They just have nitrile drainback seals and not much material, just supplied from the lowest contractor, the one I bought was made in spain, they are the type which has a square gasket that comes off the filter, I personally used filters that had orange silicone drainback valves and rounded crimped gasket such as Japanese market Nissan pitwork or blueprint filters and mag power filters. Without getting too technical I don't think the Nissan UK filters are the best, there are other options which are of equal or higher quality, the reason why I suggested to use any "quality filter".

Probably read it as "a filter of any quality" rather than "any filter of quality" - I must admit I read it that way.
