I did an idiotic thing today. I topped up the windscreen washer bottle with liquid from a bottle of the right colour, and with liquid of the right colour, then looked at the label. It was antifreeze. I didn?t think that it would do any harm, but wasn?t sure whether it would have the desired effect, i.e., sparkling clear windscreen. So, I spent about a half-hour siphoning it out with a small bore tube.

Has anybody any tales of emergency measures for windscreens and radiators.?

One of the tricks I learned when I was in Africa was how to fix a radiator leak when there were no motor factors for 100 miles in any direction. You can usually buy eggs, and the white makes a good sealant. The chap I learned it from had it in place for three months when he told me.

Don?t mention nylon stockings for a fanbelt. Two things, women wear tights now, and it doesn?t work anyhow.

anti-freeze will take the paint off so i wouldnt use your windscreen wipers , oh i once knew a woman who put water in the brake reservoir to top it up, and had the cheek to ask if she could borrow my car whilst hers was at the garage being fixed!!!

Worked with a bloke, who's wife filled the engine full of water to the top of the oil filler hole!
I had a heater matrix go on my triumph 2.5 so removed both hoses to the matrix & blanked them with 2 old spark plugs i had in the boot. Just nipped the hose clips onto the plugs. Got me home

My turn to drive home from the rugby club after doing a cooling system job, and forgetting to tighten a hose clip.
What would you refill a radiator with in the middle of nowhere with four guys who've drunk in the order of ten pints each - it stinks when you flush it!

I've used baling twine tied to the throttle linkage of the carb, out under the front wing and along the side of the car.

I sat in the back seat operating the throttle whilst the car's owner drive to the next village.

We found an electrical shop, bought some choc block and repaired the throttle cable properly.

The other week I checked my oil and it could stand to have a bit added, so I did. Only realised when I'd finished that the funnel wasn't actually sticking into the filler hole properly, so I'd just poured about half a litre onto my engine undertray and from there onto the garage floor.

The following day I ordered a decent 'clean funnel' from demon tweeks, so hopefully it won't happen again. It was a right pain to clean up.

When I was 18 I ran an MG Metro for a very cold winter with no working heater. Not only would it not blow any warm air out, it would blow hardly any cold air out onto the windscreen either.

I couldnt afford to get it repaired, so used to drive round with lots of de-icer, and a flask of warm water. With de-icer the screen could ice up again and steam up, but warm water cleared it well... for a while.
I made some ridiculous air diverters out of cardboard, to re-direct air from the face vents up onto the windscreen, but after a week they went a bit soggy!

TBH I didnt use the car that much, never did more than a 5 mile journey in it at the time, I was still at school and walking was preferable to driving that thing!

Remember when oil came in 1/2 litre tin cans and you opened them by pulling a foil strip that ran across the top of the can?

One retailer, (Esso I think) sold antifreeze in almost identical cans as oil - blue can with a darker blue diagonal stripe

Can you guess what I did ;-)
