GXi 2.0:'safe' engine or not ? - adverse camber
By which I guess he means is it an interference engine or not. ie will the valves hit the pistons in the event of t/belt failure.

I found this Gates american site, if it's of any use:- www.familycar.com/CarCare/GatesFrame.htm

Someone may look it up for you in an Autodata belt book.

However, the Gates site said my engine was non-interference, whereas the Autodata book said it was interference - I changed the belt.

maybe it depends on the time in the month then? whether its safe?

Unless I'm much mistaken this is the old Ford 2.0 engine - in which case it is an interference engine (not safe!).

Thanks Aprilia, but I've looked in the Pdf doc in the site given above (familycar.com) about Timing belt information and according to them it is a non-interference engine, "free running" they call it.

Would the engine give any warning before the belt snaps?

You can't trust the books anyway all of the time.
The Autodata one had mine down as "damage may be caused" whereas in fact it is non-interference. I emailed them, they confirmed with Mazda and the next years was corrected.

Thanks, that's interesting, I'll contact Mazda but last time I did I waited for ages and then nothing, will persevere, do these companies have a special email addy for technical questions?
