Which diesel - 406 2.0 or a Vectra DTi ? - Absconditus
I have the choice of a 406 hdi gtx (125K) OR a vectra DTI (120K) both on an X plate and both are under £3,000, Ive test driven both, The vectra pulls better or seems to at least i can feel when the turbo kicks in and has FSH, the peugeot 406 has history upto 100k but owner says he serviced it himself there on in.

Couldnt feel when the turbo kicked in on the 406 (is this normal ?) and the clutch biting point was very high....normal ? ready for a new clutch maybe ?

The vectra seems better but i keep reading a load of horror stories about engine managment etc etc.........

Im just really confused which one to go for, any advice which would cost me less in the long run ? and which is more reliable ? and which is cheaper on parts and repair should anything go wrong ?

Advice please guys :)

Many thanks.

120k mile Vectra will be fit the bin, full of trim rattles, shabby bits etc so go for the 406. They both sound very overpriced though.

If I'm not mistaken, the 90bhp version of the 406 doesn't have a turbo.. at least I don't think mine does. I believe they were fitted on the 110 bhp version; there should be a small sticker down at the bottom of the b post visible when the drivers door is open telling you which one it is.
The trim actually stands up quite well in the 406... mine now has 185k on the clock (also an X reg) and still returns 45 mpg around town all day long.

406 by a mile but neither for as much as £3k. It takes mileage (if not necessarily age) very well, is pleasant to drive, has a spacious and robust interior and looks so much better than the Vauxhall.

Oh and the 90bhp HDi definitely does have a turbo but not much oomph although plenty of lazy torque to suit a relaxed driving style.

The HDi 90 is suited to being 'chipped'. Mine was done by Simon Coe for about £250 and has increased to approx 108bhp - a lot more flexible torque and far more driveable.

The ride of the 406 is enough to convince me you should not go for the Vectra.

Both 90 and 110 variants of the Pug / Citroen engine have turbos. The 110 has an uprated (variable vane I think) unit and an intercooler. You can easily tell the 2 apart - the 90 has a single air pipe running from the air filter over the top of the engine, the 110 has a second air pipe running next to this. You don't really feel the turbo in the way you could on the old XUDT engines - the HDi just pulls linearly all the way to 4.5k rpm and is deceptively quick. Oh, and if the clutch comes in high up then it's nearly worn out....

£3k is far too much to pay for these though - I've recently bought a 2001X Xantia 110 HDi Estate for £3k - and it's only done 50k - hatchbacks are even cheaper!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

A high biting clutch is a characteristic of a 406 HDi.

I have Vectra B 2.0 DTI 1998 model, has gone 375K, and still does not use oil, or coolant! Always passes the emission test. Just the regular maintenance, nothing special over all! Glad I did not chose Peugeot :)

About £1500 overpriced, as a buyer but worth nothing if anything major goes wrong with either!

Yes but the OP was six years ago! Why do people resurrect these old threads for no good purpose?
