As a hgv driver (shall i start hiding from you lot now? haha), Two area`s in urgent need of motorways are from the midlands out to east anglia, and as already posted.. the south coast.
Its fun pulling 44 tonnes along the a259 through rye out to dover..

Turn the S Circular from a collection of streets into a something more like the N Circular.

The A14 Catthorpe - Harwich route was planned as a motorway when the network was first mapped but dropped for many decades until being built as the A14. The section between the A1/A1(M) and M11, around Huntingdon is currently under consideration for upgrading.
The M5/M6 still needs a western relief motorway.
The A5 route west of the M54, up to North Wales, would remove a lot of traffic round Chester if it was a motorway standard.
|
Stick an extra lane on the M6 and M5, turn the A34 into the M34 and extend the M3 all the way to where the A303 meets the M5 at Taunton (?). Heaven!

If you get that far west, the hairpin bend at Winchelsea must be a 'mare?
Can't figure out whether the last bit is some sort of "modern speak" !! - PU
Don't worry PU, the youngster fixed it. PG (Down with the kids ;-) )

The best roads IMHO are in Iran, look on google earth at "Azadegan Aquapark, tehran"
Zoom out until you see the beautiful intersections and multi lane highways, then follow them.

It is a bit "interesting" zippy. I collect a load fairly regularly from St Leonards on sea for Belgium and its the quickest way to the ports.
Which is why i still believe the south coast is in need of at least a dual carriageway(it will never happen though-too many expensive houses down there)

The programme got me thinking whether we will ever take large scale decisions in this country to build any more major motorway type roads other than in areas of the country desperate for regeneration (not so many left and the houses cost £90k and not 10k these days even in them).
the programme ultimately made me realise how if people had behaved as per Twyford Down in relation to the past building of railways/motorways nothing would have got built. We'd still have turnpikes...
Sometimes the end does justify the means.

Build the M13 in parallel with the A13 to carry all the extra traffic that the new A130 as put onto this road, including much which would have previously used the M25/ A12 to get to Felixstowe and Harwich.
I don't think the designation of M13 has been used in the UK for a motorway yet, but, if it has, just call it something else.

Do you mean that there is now a lot of traffic going east on the A13 (to the Benfleet area) and then using the A130 north to the A12 and then onwards to the ports?
I often go A131, A12, A130, A13 to get to the Dartford crossing from Braintree rather than going down the A12 all the way to the M25.

"A second would be a cross Pennine route from Sheffield to Manchester - conversion of the old Woodhead railway line has been mooted, but will this ever happen?"
I read that the M67 was just such a road... if completed. Link was via a thread on here as well. So now unlikely to happen. But:
- M67 at the Denton roundabout was meant to carry on over the junction with M60
- Missing bits of the flyover in the city centre (off/on ramps never built)
- M67 at the other end was never meant to end at the roundabout
So this was planned probably and now we all suffer.

Motorway from Newmarket A11/A14 junction to Norwich. Suffolk and Norfolk do not have a single yard of Mway at the moment .......... the A11 is still single carriageway for 10 miles!
|
M303 is not a bad idea though it would lose a lot of character, could justify the tunnel under Stonehenge.
Also agree M27 to Brighton.
Also London to Norwich.
And perhaps Swindon, Oxford, Northhampton.

I live/work/drive nowhere near there, so it wouldn't have affected me one way or the other - but fascinating all the same!
