VW Bora 1.9 tdi - over filling with oil - hammer
If the engine was overfilled with engine oil to say 1.5 lites to much would this cause it to over rev and throw a con rod through the side of the block. if so why would this happen

What would be the consequence of over filling with oil by about 1.5 litres

Unfortunately in your case it caused it to over rev and throw a con rod through the side of the block.
I guess the excess oil was consumed as a fuel somehow.
Excess oil leaking onto the clutch , blowing out of breathers or nothing at all would be the usual consequences , depending on the engine.

Has this disaster occured or are you asking if it might? I took my diesel back to have the level adjusted - it had been overfilled during a main dealer service and I doubt if it was 1/4 litre. The amount you quote would be very very risky. If your engine has not yet over revved and destroyed itself get some oil out PDQ!

The two separate questions started by Hammer have now been merged. DD.

This can happen when diesel turbo's fail, the turbo lube oil is sucked through into the inlet manifold and the engine runs away uncontrollably, fuelled by the lube oil: overfilling by 1.5 litres will probably cause lots of drag/frothing as the crank goes round but I can't see an obvious route for excess oil to get into the induction side and cause a runaway?

My VAG 1.9 PD engine has at least 2 prominently displayed warnings under the bonnet relating to oil overfill.

In moderation, the oil overfill will damage the oxidation catalyst fitted to these engines, in excess (1.5 l is excess) the engine could run away and be destroyed.

The "route" for each disaster is the same. If an engine is overfilled, oil is carried via the crankcase ventilation system as "blowby" - the rings cannot cope with the amounts of oil splashed up into the bores. A diesel will happily run on anything combustible in the inlet tract - which is where the crankase vent goes.

The engine then "runs away" burning the oil in the inlet; the governor will shut off the (diesel) fuel - to no effect. Exactly the same thing happens to boat diesels if a gas bottle leaks propane into the bottom of the hull. Be warned.

Thanks 659FBE - I knew the facts but could not post them as clearly and lucidly as you! The boat aspect is interesting too.

659 FBE - Excellent summary, I should have thought of the crankcase breather system and the effects of splash.

A few years ago I heard of a large truck engine running away on the test bed at a factory we supplied parts to; when it blew up the flywheel went through the roof and landed a fair few yards away, pity no-one had a camcorder handy (or maybe they did but had taken cover)
