Any cabriolets got a decent boot? - barney100
I was looking at a new Megane cabriolet the other day and idly looked in the boot which with the roof down left enough room for a regular briefcase and not much else. Are there any cabriolets with a decent boot that would take a set of golf clubs?

Any one where the hood folds down on the outside tho' on some you can't open the boot with the hood down.

I have a grey import totoyta Celica GT, the boot is enormous, as deep and long & wide as the standard hatchback.

The convertible is 1994-99 build only.

Most will be grey-imports, as although UK cars were available they were so expensive new (£33K I believe) that no-one actually bought any, so very few UK specs around.

The rear-seats are also reasonable size, provided you don't have a very tall adult in the front (like me !!)

Can't recommend them more highly.

They have approx 170BHP from a non-turbo 2.oi engine. fuel economy is very good if driven sensibly, and the automatic transmission is prob the best to go for - works very well with the engine, doesn't need revving to give performance.

all in all a very quick and stylish car.

The new shape celica doesn't have a convertible.......

Top car SS. Must be rare as a Northampton virgin though. How did you come by it may I ask?

there is a chap in east grinstead, AJ SUtton car-sales who specialises in grey-import celicas

plenty of them on autotrader anyway, although more of the earlier "pop-up" headlight shape, which isn't as powperful, although still a good car I think

Radical suggestion: MB W124 (A124) E-class cabriolet. Now between 10 and 15 years old, but a handsome and highly desirable car commanding a chunky premium over coupé and saloon siblings -- £10--£20k asking-price range. Now an established classic and prices are likely to stay firm, so depreciation should be low. It has a boot large enough to surprise you.

There are more around than you might expect and the chances are that enough of them have been well looked after. They were built before MB's quality problems arrived, but best to avoid the water-based paint that started in August 1995. Mercedes Enthusiast magazine will have some ads. If you are interested, I can supply more details and links.

MBs are not that costly to run, provided that you get servicing and repairs done by an independent. OEM parts prices are generally not outrageous, and there's always Euro Car Parts and GSF for lower prices.

Or for similar money a more modern CLK convertible. Slightly smaller but still a 4-seater with a good size boot.

But I haven't a clue if golf clubs would fit. There must surely be better things to do with your spare time!!

Yes, the CLK might do it, but it is a distinctly smaller car, based on the C-class chassis, so I guess the boot is much smaller. That said, the W124 boot is near cavernous.

A friend of a friend bought a Boxter and sold it after his partner gave him what-for because there was no chance of carrying holiday luggage in it.

If your budget is 11k+ how about a Boxster, you should be able to get clubs in the front boot (just), and the back boot (which will easily take weekend luggage for 2) doesn't 'shrink' when you put the hood down.

If you have a bit more cashola, and want something a bit newer, the BMW Z4 has a huge boot for a roadster, easily taking 2 full size golf bags.

Both will destroy the Megane in terms of fun, image, drivability, handling, reliability, build quality, and depreciation. Independent servicing will work out no more expensive than servicing a Megane at a Renault dealership. Does this come across as impartial??!!!

Get a secondhand Mazda MX5 and just use it as a toy, it will carry a set of clubs but not a trolley.

I used to get 2 sets of clubs into an MG Midget. Mind you, if I'd braked sharply, my brother would n't have gone on to father 4 kids.......
