Hi I have a 56 plate Hyundai Tucson with 8000 miles . Had it from new . I have noticed on at least 5 occasions that blue smoke has been coming from the exhaust . Engine normal temperature . the last occasion was yesterday on the motorway . Aftre about 20 miles i noticed blue smoke through my rear view mirror , it got thicker and thicker until after a further 5 miles i had to stop . No increase in temperature but thier was a slight burning smell ,which i pressume must have been oil because of the blue smoke. Switched the engine off and left to cool and settle for a couple of minutes . checked oil level , reads half way on dip stick . Topped oil up and then restarted engine . After running for a minute all traces of blue smoke gone and i was on my way again with no further problems . This is typical of what has happened previously ......... Any ideas anybody

how much oil has it used? ie how many miles to the litre?

Assuming its a diesel could it be something to do with particle filters and self cleaning?
However if you've stopped 5 times and needed to add oil each time its probably something else.

Good suggestion - from the CR-V user manual:
"Periodically the exhaust temperature is increased and the PM burnt ... the fuel consumption will temporarily increase and some exhasut smoke may be visible".
Question of how bad/frequent it is and if it's using oil I guess. Does the Tucson have a DPF (not all diesel CR-Vs do, including mine - something to be grateful for).

take it back before it goes pop and you get the blame because they say it has no oil in it
always remember filling up auction cars to the level with s/h oil prior to taking them to auction so the buyers thought they were good cars

On reflection this is top advice from bb - you'll have mitigated as far as possible if you've given them chance to fix it.

I will be getting in touch with Hyundai this week . I find though that dealers are sometimes reluctant to talk about it and usually say they have never heard of a problem like it .. Yes its a diesel wouldn,t buy any other . In 8000 miles i have used 2 litres of oil ..

well 4000 miles per litre in an engine that still running in is not excessive.

I agree with TVM. In the first 3000 miles the Transit connect at work used 2 litres of oil. Now that it's run in, it doesn't use any.
Most handbooks will also state that an engine can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles.

The oil consumption might be 'normal', or at least within tolerance, but chucking out black smoke in lumps isn't. bellboy had the best idea.

but chucking out black smoke in lumps isn't.
The OP says it's blue smoke.
Black smoke would suggest it's diesel rather than engine oil.

Correction - "chucking blue smoke out in lumps isn't".
Thank you.

Hi As advised by you guys i took my car to the main dealer ,explaining very carefully the symtoms i was getting . making it clear to them it was blue smoke not black . They had a quick look at it and drove it and said i would have to take it back next week . They have said that they need to look at the injectors and maybe the turbo . Please correct me if i'm wrong if you have problems with either of these items you would get black smoke reguarlly not blue smoke occasionally .
I always thought BLUE smoke ----- OIL
BLACK smoke ---- fuel
I didn't argue with the dealers because i wasn't 100% sure
Any suggestions , Please read my first comment which i gave a typical example of what was happening ..

The turbo oil seals could be going, that allows oil into the combustion process.

Thanks for that comment . As you may have worked out i dont have much respect for the dealers but your comment about the turbo oil seals sounds a strong possibility ..
