Hi all,
I have just bought a Golf GTI Anniversary. I have been told the alloys are prone to corrosion and cannot be refurbished as they are chrome. The alloys currently are in very good condition and I plan to keep them that way but am not sure how. I fear the salt in the winter will not do them good.
A friend had his alloys treated (they weren't chrome but normal silver) which has kept them looking mint. Can I get my alloys treated to protect them from the grit and salt from the road?
Cheers

Buy a set of steel wheels and use them in the winter

They're not chromed, they're ball bearing polished and lacquered. Winter wheels are the best option

Don't know if this helps but I was thinking about this with my "new" used alloys and to have a go myself (I don't have the space to store a set of steel winter wheels) It's a simple DIY job if you have a bit of time and cash (much more of the former than the latter!). Best with the wheels off and you can clean out the wheel arches too! Remove all the dirt and contaminants such as tar and brake dust. Shine them up using a polish or a cleaner wax and then seal them with a couple of coats of wheel specific wax or sealant that is designed to resist the higher temperatures of the brake dust that comes into contact with the alloy and etches the surface. I did mine a couple of weeks ago and the dirt just falls off with a light power hosing which suggests that the extra protection will really help during the winter months.

You need to be very carefull what you use to clean the wheels, once the lacquer is scratched the corrosion will start. They're £450 + VAT each and made by BBS, not VW (thats before the VAG-slag train arrives) so I would'nt use abrasives or pressure washers if they were mine
