Just wa?nt to say I wish I could get insurance on one of these, (20 years old and male, doesn't lend itself), cause I absolutely adore the last UK Supras, neighbour had one when I was 10 and he said back then it was the only supercar that had the looks, the speed and the reliability to be a sound long-term proposition.

Depends a lot on which model you want.

Mk2 - problem is rust and rear LSD diffs need adjusting circa 60K. Plus point is cheap classic car insurance.
Mk3 - head gasket problems are common, some rust issues around rear arches. Very hard to find good ones that havn't been abused.
Mk4 - can be hard to find one that hasn't been modded. True supercar performance for peanuts. I've been looking for one myself for a while now, just waiting for a nice one to come up locally. Personally I'm looking for a nice 6 speed twin turbo.

UK version is slightly quicker than jap version with 0-60 in 4.9 secs.

All models are rear wheel drive - great fun but be careful in the wet with that much power!

Try here for details on MkIVs:

www.mkivsupra.net/

Insurance on imports is much easier that it used to be. Try specialist brokers like:

www.skyinsurance.co.uk/
www.adrianflux.co.uk/
car.swinton.co.uk/

Don't rule out imports on insurance grounds as they can be in fantastic condition.

(Must dash this off, something ate the first effort when trying to post.)

I generally agree with Moonshine.

Mk2 - These vary very much; this is a car to which the rule of buying the best particularly applies, as a basket case will cost a bomb to rebuild. One wants to get the late version with the wide wheel arches as the handling is much improved. The best should be well within budget. There is just enough power to unstick the rear in the wet. A very pleasant drive.
Open the hatch and put a hand down behind the nearside rear wheel arch; it may well save bothering to look further.

Mk3 - The original alloy wheels can be a putoff long before there is anything wrong with the rest of the car. Try to look out for overheating on a test drive, the cooling system getting bunged is the precursor to that gasket trouble. One wants a pre-cat example of the unblown version, the later ones being a bit anaemic. A reasonable drive, if just a little "woolly" in the handling.

Mk4 - Not quite peanuts, a decent twin turbo is well beyond the stated budget. Agreed it is hard to find one that has not been messed up mechanically and/or "restyled". Even I plead guilty to a Superchipping. Six speeds are fine, but do not necessarily overlook the automatic transmission which works well and is less liable to abuse. The performance is well known, but they go round corners well too at least on P Zeros - in the dry anyway!
There is, by the way, the non-turbo version, which is less expensive to run and still better than a Mk3. Also there is no wing, which some think improves the styling.

A web search will turn up much information.

I recall the Japanese NA version is about 225bhp. So still plenty fast.

But you will get every boy racer in town trying it on with you, and may soon wish you did indeed have the turbos under the bonnet.
