I am sure threads like this must have been done before, but a few minutes of searching didn't show anything. I hope it hasn't come up too recently.
Based purely on performance, what is the fastest car you can buy secondhand for £1,000?
To open it up a bit, ff your budget stretched to £5,000, what is the fastest car you could buy for the money?
I'm not thinking of buying another car -- stuck with my Citroen ZX 1.9TD for a while yet. Just wondering (dreaming?). ;)

Hi there pendulum, A metro G.T.i. M.p.i. was the fastest thing i have ever drove over the years, for little money, until i bought a clio V6 for big money. Frightening thing that was......Cheers, Graham.

drove a 3.0ltr omega the other day that a friend paid 500 for. that was pretty quick and pulled to 120 with loads to spare. i guess would have gone over 140

Agreed. These are little rockets. A mate at college had one and it always impressed me.
Got stolen alarmingly frequently though.

1996 BMW 3 SERIES 328i SE 4dr Saloon £995
1987 PORSCHE 924 S FH 2dr 2+2 S Coupe 2.5 £1000
I'm sure there are faster..
|
Get yourself to an auction and buy an old white van, preferably a clapped-out sprinter. There's nothing faster..
|
£1000- Nissan 200SX
£5000-Prodrive Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 or E36 M3 BMW.
|
Jag XJS...........V12 5.3..........get an old nail and it'll be peanuts
TG did it didn't they, stripped one out, put nitrous on it and it out accelerated supercars

Yeah, much faster, the 924 is not a fast car, esp. by todays standards. For a grand a 3.0 Supra (the 1980s one) is a rapid car!
|
You can pick up a mid 90's Civic 1.8 VTI for £1,000. 180bhp, 8500RPM and about 1100kg - quite a speedy combination.
Looks like a 1.5 grandad special as well, which makes it even more appealing.
Cheers

As suggested by Pot, there are plently of cheap Mk3 supras around.
There's a very nice Mk2 (same as mine) on Ebay at the moment

Here's a nice Mk3 (non turbo but there are plently of turbo ones around as well)

If you want top speed you want to be looking at big HP- therefore you need to look at big bmws and mercs. You can get an e34 540 with 286bhp that might still last one run up to terminal velocity, also you might find a 750 which has over 300bhp. I think a 750 will be marginally quicker than an XJS V12 but i'm not sure.
At 5k its a much more dofficult question at a guess a toyota supra, with the boost pressure wound right up till its about to burst (circa 400bhp), or a 540 with a well ported head. I dont think you could get a knackered lotus carlton for this money, but if you could those are very very fast.

Astra GTE are plentiful.
and slow.
|
er?
nissan pulsar?
colt starion?
viva brabham

For a grand perhaps:
Carlton GSi 24v
E34(?) BMW 535
Alfa 164 3.0 V6 or Alfa 75 3.0 V6
|
|
|
Not the 16v. Will still paste a current Golf GTI to a ton.

The GTE 16v I mean.
One road test report at the time said how it would beat a V12 XJS to 60, 100 and from 50-70 and 60-80.
Very quick car even by modern hot hatch standards
Shame about the handling though.

Most of these comments seem to assume the OP is asking for the fastest car in a straight line rather than point to point.
May I suggest he may not have meant a straight line drag.
|
I pretty much did mean a straight line drag. :o)
Thanks for all the replies, interesting reading.

Meh...
Might be fast by hot hatch standards, but we're not just restricted to hot hatches.
While a 7 second 0-60 is certainly not to be sniffed it, I'd be amazed if it was within the 10 fastest cars you can get for £1000.
|
A rover 220 Turbo Coupe would be in the under 1K bracket for a bad one and they are pretty rapid as long as you dont want to go around a corner too fast!
|
Sure that this will 'bring the house diwn' but, just the same; In my cavalry regiment officer 'youth' I had a Reliant Scimitar.....it did the standard Scimitar things i.e. caught fire due to the fuel line vibrating off the carburettor neck but otherwise was ok!
In fact, if/when I return to the UK I will hope to get another one (with armoured fuel line and re-inforced connection to carb)
Look for a good one, preferably owned by an enthusiast, with armoured fuel line, no over heating problems and a history of front suspension maintenance and you will be in for years of fun motoring at negligable expense - pretty damn quick, too.

Astra GTE 16v, the 156hp non-cat version, 0-60 in 6.9 WhatCar, around 18secs to 100mph. Kicked the stuffing out of a Ford Cosworth Sapphire if you knew how to get the power down. I heard from our Vauxhall main dealer when it first came out that the sales guys took bets on which new buyers wouldn't be able to handle the speed of the car and would bring it back needing repair work, about 2 out of 3 came back within the first month. Shortly after that the police would routinely pull them over as they were used and nicked by kids for joy riding and for other for not having properly insurance. Not worth the hassle if you ask me.
Times don't change though, a guy down the road had a Focus ST2, it attracted the wrong kind of attention at night so he sold it, now he sleeps easy at night.

dear oh dear oh dear! not a sniff of a griffin badge like that getting across a finish line before a 'cult' hero like that saph cossie! sorry but it aint happening. spec's c/o rsoc:
0-60 > 6.1 what car 02/1988 (quickest ever measured 5.8 secs)
0-100 > 15.8 what car 02/1988
Standing quarter mile > 14.4 secs @ 97mph
www.rsownersclub.co.uk/car_info/Ser2wdsc.htm
£5000 > how about a mid ninties Audi RS4, porsche performance in a family car. Wolf very much in sheeps clothing.
|
Guess the guy in the cossie didn't know how to drive then, even though he nearly blow his engine trying - what a racket !
|
For £1k - Nissan 200SX or a Peugeot 306 S16.
