Where's me tax disc? - Lounge Lizard
I bought a new 12-month tax-disc on-line on Wednesday 25-Apr-07 (very late at night) using a credit-card.

The transaction appeared to go smoothly with confirmations that all the stages had worked. It was a straightforward renewal (no changes of address or anything) and my credit-card account is always properly maintained.

It's now Thursday 03-May-07 and I haven't received the tax-disc.

Should I be worried?

I'm still driving the car, complete with a tax-disc that expired on 30-Apr-07.

Am I committing a criminal offence?

If Plod stopped me (or spotted me parked up at the shops) could I just explain the situation and no further action would be taken (presumably my payment would be registered on the tax-disc copmputer)?

His PNC will tell hime whether you have a tax or not - probably got lost/stolen in the post, best phone DVLA, level 34 of theor telephone menu allows you to do this.

Oh yes, it is an offende not to display as well (before I'm corrected), usually a fixed penalty offence, but unlikely, come across this only once in 25 years work.

A few weeks ago I got stopped by a plod because his PNC told him my car wasn't taxed - luckily the tax disc on my windscreen with several months to go on it persuaded him otherwise...

Effectively a week? I'd expect to have it by now, but probably not yet a cause for alarm. IIRC they come in a plain white envelope rather then old fashioned OHMS type manilla - overlooked mine and put it in the "probably junk- sort next free weekend" pile.

Found that if you report it missing they're surprisingly obliging about issuing a duplicate.

ooops, I'm embarrassed to admit that you're right, Brompto.

Read your post, went to my <"probably junk- sort next free weekend" pile.> and, Hay Presto, there it was.

Thanks for all the replies; I'll get me coat.

I bought mine Saturday lunchtime and it arrived today, so would have expected yours to arrive Tuesday. Only did mine online because I couldn't find my insurance certificate. Very straightforward, but I'll probably be back at our local Post Office next year as I like to support them.

I quite frequently order tax discs online and find the service to be very efficient. In fact I find DVLA to be pretty good - anytime I have a query I can usually get through and get an answer. I don't know why people knock them so much. If my cable TV/ISP company and mobile phone provider were half as good, I would be delighted!

By saving the DVLC money by ordering online they should be offering us motorists a discount..................hold on, that's me talking rubbish, how silly of me to think that would ever happen !!.

"but I'll probably be back at our local Post Office next year as I like to support them."

Abd that's exactly why they should give a discount at your village PO. Goodnight Post Office, Goodbye John Boy, they'll be a memory beofre long.

I used the online facility for the first time recently and i was surprised how simple and quick it was. I have no interest in supporting my local post office, if it's needed it will survive and if it isn't so what.

You obviously don't live in a rural area where post offices are essential for small villages.

I live in a small village where the post office closed last year after the death of the owner. We have all survived.

i must add that you need to be aware of all facts before you tackle
them though

Good point. I think half the trouble is that Joe Punter rings up and doesn't have information to hand or has forgotten it. Then gets irate and blames DVLA. I know from being in the motor trade that half of drivers don't know what size engine is in the car and most can't remember their reg.
Yesterday afternoon a chap asked me to look at his Toyota MPV (import). Oil light was randomly flashing on. I asked what engine it had - 'Diesel' he says. I asked what size - 'Don't know'. I ask if its got a turbo - 'Don't know'. I ask what year it is (private plate) - 'Don't know'. I ask if he's just bought is - 'No, had it two years'!

I have to agree as well. Son could not find driving license so called up to get replacement. Phoned on a afternoon Friday and they said it would be in the batch over the weekend and be with us on the Tuesday. And indeed it did turn up on the Tuesday.

I buy mine at a Post Office because I don't trust Royal Mail to deliver it.

There's been some posts here knocking government IT contracts - so it's good to see some positive responses from satisfied users. I would agree - I've used the DVLA / VOSA sites a fair bit since my Mazda was written off and found them useful. I also found their call centre very useful when I called for an answer regarding SORN for my car awaiting write-off.
HMRC can also be very helpful.
I'd agree with Aprilia - if only my cable company were this helpful.
I'll be using the online service where possible.

I support our local post office for the sake of the elderly who depend on it. The world of IT, internet etc. is alien to a lot of older folk. I wonder how many people over 70 use this website? Or any other for that matter. I will leave it at that.

Good to see some public workers getting some praise, frequently criticised by many including on here. SWMBO is one and works far harder than me for a salary I wouldn't get out of bed for.

I like a story with a happy ending - especially an amusing tale, and one that may turn out to be useful to me. So, to Lounge Lizard and Bromptonaut, many thanks.

On the subject of Post Offices, I was never able to get a tax disc at my local village Post Office. I had to go to a main post office in town - which is over 40 miles away for me. Hence last time I ordered mine online.

Despite being young, I much prefer the thought of going to the PO with MOT and Insurance certificates, and having someone physically put a tax disc into my hand, which can then be put straight onto my windscreen.

It's the queueing. Particularly when mindless transactions are occurring. Fortunately, my local PO has a small library of magazines to read whilst one queues. I understand the proprietor occasionally sells one or two as well. Something to do with being a newsagent I'll warrant.

When I renewed online I received immediately an e-mail
confirming renewal with a reference number and the following message.
"The Tax Disc and receipt should arrive in the post within 5 working days.
Should your tax disc not arrive after 5 working days, then please phone us on 0870 850 4444 and choose option 4 then option 1 and be prepared to quote the Reference Number."

Just thought I'd add my own experience of online tax disc renewal - applied for it on the website on June 19th, waited... waited some more... phoned up the DVLA yesterday, man at DVLA offered to send out another one by Special Delivery to arrive today.

Postman appeared this morning with, you guessed it, TWO tax discs!

"small library of magazines to read whilst one queues"

Popped into our village PO today, whilst waiting to be served I noticed they had a copy of the Morning Star for sale, follwoing my recent neo-socialist conversion I paid homage and bought it. Frightfully boring but totally bizzare. I was thinking about the cringeworthy things in a car thread and it now resides on the back shelf of my twin turbo BMW. Karl Marx - figure that out !

[...I noticed they had a copy of the Morning Star for sale...]

Funny you should mention that, Pug. The 'Morning Star' has, in the last couple of weeks, suddenly appeared on the shelves of my local Co-op (or whatever it's called these days).

Are they having a sales drive?

I haven't read the Morning Star since 1981, when I did a General Studies A-level presentation contrasting the presentation of a news item in the Daily Torygraph with the same news item in the Morning Star.

Them Zil Limos woz well great innit?

There's an advert in this one for a Morning Star mug, which I am going to order, £2.99 cash/PO or heaven forbid a Credit Card, how old Labour is that ?
