whilst an experienced driver there are a few insections that i try and avoid whereever possible.

Living in Weybridge surrey, I always avoid the M3 / M25 Junction, its just so dangerous and generally slow traffic, so when returning from the South, depart the M3 and return via Chobham.

The other junction that I hate is the M25/M26/A21 -

The final juction I also avoid is the M1/M25 , not because of many problems, it's just I find the A41, Watford area ALWAYS has some of the cheapest fuel around, a good toilet and food stop and very easy access back onto the M1
where do other BR'S try and avoid

M60/M62 junction at Worsley (North Manchester).

Horrid!!! If you're coming onto the M62 towards Leeds you're fighting with the people coming off the M62 to come off at Worsley, about 1/3 of a mile further on. I have seen many accidents!

Another "good" one I found yesterday is the M5/M48 ( I think ) junction for S Wales... much the same as the above.

On a slightly different tack, why does it cost a fiver to cross a bridge to get into Wales?!

The M3 southbound M27 westbound split is my least favourite, particularly during the summer when happy campers towing their caravans tip them over at the split point and make me late home for my tea.

I've seen some absolute classic cases of dire driving there. The signage is more than adequate......perhaps people just don't know the difference between Portsmouth and Bournemouth ??

I can only assume that people are confused by the necessity to filter off left i.e. East when heading for Bournemouth, which is West, and leave the manouver to the last second.

The downhill slope from J12 probably makes this worse for the caravanners and foreign lorry drivers trying to work out whether they are going to Pompey or Poole docks, and hence which lane they need.

Nope, they're just idiots. Many's the time I have had to take refuge in the outside lane there (fortunately I am always going from M3 south to M27 east) to avoid the jousting in the inner lanes.

Charging a quid for the national vegetable beggars belief.

That is appalling.

Hmm - Venn diagram time. How about the intersection of A and B (A-upside-down-U-B) , where
A is the set of people who can't park a car tidily, and
B is the set of people who drive large 4x4s in urban areas
?

Hmm, that didn't come out as intended!

I was trying to say B is a subset of A.

I too use the Lightwater bypass if heading for Weybridge/Woking though if heading for Heathrow for instance it is often best to go off the M3 on to the anticlockwise M25 to Chertsey then double back clockwise rather than crawl in the queue off the M3 onto the clockwise M25.

A303 Countess Services / Stone Henge worth avoiding on occasions.

>>.... M3.......though if heading for Heathrow
(when it is busy / rush hour)

If it is T4 then stay on the M3 (outside lane and smile at the queue) and take the first exit off the A316
Across lower Feltham to the A30 and T4
I have given this route to many and they are all amazed how well it works in both directions.
It is not at all an obvious route on a map.
This was my comuting route ( Heathrow to the A316 at this point ) for many many years

It is even faster FROM T4.
No Heathrow traffic, No M25, No M25 / M3 junction to worry about but straight up the ramp to the A316 and then flyover J1 of the M3 and zoom under the M25 and they join you.

I can post the details of the urban bit if anyone wants it.

Certainly NOT! I would not entertain it. I know the ways around it. That is why my route avoids it.

I think you may have not identified my route from my limited description.

Details from Heathrow T4
A30 towards Staines til the first roundabout and take the first left. Through Lakeside and past the well know Felthan Young Offenders and straight on.
Cross straight over the A244 at Lower Feltham. Take Sunbury Road but do NOT take the obvious right (signed to Sunbury) at the mini roundabout but go left on Feltham Hill Rd and then join the A316 Country Way ( by the old dairy with the concrete cows on the roof). Then enjoy zooming over Sunbury Cross at NSL.
Not an obvious route and a little bit longer but enjoyable and you always make very acceptable progress.

I drive the M3/M25/M40(E) most mornings and rarely have had a problem since the widening between J12 and J15.

Sunday evenings, the M25 / M26 merger is guaranteed to be backed up for 5 to 10 miles, without fail, between about 16.00 and 20.00...

[ The M26 bit is usually empty, but when you reach the M25, it's always solid; on one occasion I had to come back via the M2 instead of the M20 / M26 and found the tailback reached almost as far as Dartford... ]
