VW Bora - Charcoal filter? - lucyandneil
Hi there,

When I bought my VW Bora last week, I agreed with the salesman that he should get the 'ticking' sound that the engine was making fixed before I pick it up tomorrow. Spoke to him today, and he's assured me that the ticking noise is down to the charcoal filter, and they all do it! Its perfectly normal apparently.

I managed to find another link on the interweb regarding this, but it sounds a bit odd to me.

Its probably mega-common and I'm sounding a bit mental, but I am curious what its all about.

Cheers

IIRC It's a purge valve that vents fumes from the tank into either the inlet manifold (when in a vacuum state) or to the atmosphere via a chacoal canister (filter). I've never heard one click though, they are usuallty silent. Best thing to do is compare it with another one to see if it clicks.

Hard to comment without hearing it.
Is the ticking rapid and in time with the engine rpm? If so then unlikely to be the charcoal canister.

not your earring then?
i remember the old golf had a squeek which was cured with a can of oil

Actually, it did seem to be in time with the engine. When I first heard it (I was looking under the bonnet at the time) I thought it was something to do with the fan(?) belt, as it seemed to be coming from that area, and seemed to be ticking in time with the belt.

I know next to nothing about the innards of cars, and I'm hoping that this isn't a worry, and they aren't just fobbing me off about something that might be costly to fix.

Nothing to worry about here. Most Vag models have this system and this clicking noise is totally normal. On the Golf/Bora models it is more evident because the valve sits by top of r/h front wing behind headlight.hth

So the valve is operating at engine speed on these cars?!

Yes it seems to. I'm showing my age here but it sounds like a loose tappet on old pushrod engine when the oil filler or rocker cover is off. The VAG OBDII system opens the filter to the manifold vacuum at tickover and checks that the engine richens when the valve is open to check the integrity of the closed tank breather system and also as a means of checking that the lambda sensors are detecting changes.

The charcoal canister is not normally vented at idle but usually when the engine is running on "closed-loop"ie.controlled by the Lambda in order that the air flow won't affect the A/F ratio.

Thats all I wanted to hear!

I wanted an independent opinion on the matter. You can probably guess what I think of the majority of car salesmen!

can confirm that this noise is perfectly normal not nice but normal for all the vw's and some of the audi's

I can not hear my mk3 Golf charcoal control valve, but I am half deaf anyway. I would put one end of a screwdriver in contact with the charcoal control valve and the other end of the screwdrive in contact with one's ear and hear if the noise via the screwdriver is in time with the noise you hear from under the bonnet.
