Avant - I'll get back to you sometime in June about a 170 PS with DSG - thats the spec of my new A3.
Re OP query - as you have noticed the 1.9 PD started with 105PS and with tweaking reached 150PS. VAG were getting to the limit and emissions were unacceptable. The 2.0TDi started at 140PS and has already been tweaked to 250PS by VAG. 170 PS is teh first tweak, expect the output of this engine to increase over the next few years to over 200PS.

Sony - isn't your car new too? It needs 10,000 miles before it feels loosened up.

150 ps mk4 golf chucks out 146g/km according to parkers? No more than the 2.0 Tdi??
|
Yes the car is near new, just under 8000 miles on the clock. 200 ps + sounds promising!! That'll be next on my list in a couple of years time!
|
|
Probably so, but they are Euro III g/km and not Euro IV!!!
|
Ah, sorry you lost me!!? What it this Euro III and euro IV??

Standards for permitted emissions in new cars. Each new standard gets progressively tougher.
|
|
Link to table below - as you can see it's about reducing 4 different emissions from engines, not just CO2. In particular Nitrogen Oxides and Particulates.

i see!!!!!!!! so basically the 2.0 tdi is far more advanced than the 1.9 PD engine in the mk4 golf! All down to new emissions since 2006. And the fact that they can tweak it to reach 200 ps+. Nice.
So the 1.9 TDI in the mkV golf and the new A3 is a pretty poor offering then!?

Have two 1.9 diesels in our family - an 8v 1.9 110 in a SEAT Leon, and a 16v 1.9 150 CDTi in a Vectra.
The advantage of the Leon is at low revs where it excells - it has power at anything over 1k revs up to 4k.
The advantage of the Vectra is at higher revs where it can exploit its power up to 5k. The power band is from 2k upwards however. It needs revs to get it going therefore cleanly without bogging down. The Mondeo I have currently as a hire car is exactly the same.
What I want is the low down power of the Leon and the upper end power of the Vectra.

In answer to an ealier post, Skoda does do the 2.0 TDI 140bhp with DSG (also the 1.9TDI 105bhp with DSG for that matter).
I've just bought an Octavia 2.0TDi DSG.

Re-reading the earlier post I refer to above maybe you meant the 170bhp TDI DSG is not available in Skoda/SEAT, in which case I agree with you.
From what I have read the DSG goes well with the diesel engine, providing timely and swift changes to fit in with the torque band.

According to Autoexpress the new Audi Q5 (a sensible sized Q7) will be available from next year with a 204 bhp version of the 2.0TDi engine. It will meet Euro VI (6) standards for emissions.

My Mk5 105TDi PD is defininately much quicker than the MK4 110 (non-PD) that preceeded it. The MK5 is a big improvement over the MK4, imho. If I remember correctly, DieselCar (in the good old days before it changed) reckoned that the MK4 130 was a nicer drive than the 150, as the 150 had a larger turbo and suffered from more noticable turbo lag. Perhaps it's the delayed, but powerful, response from the engine room that gives you the impression that the 150 was quicker?
The MKV is a 16v and apparantly is happier to rev higher - I've no particular grumble with my 'old' 1.9 - it's less road noise that would give a better improvement to its refinement, I think.
