Hi, I have bought my daughter a cheap and cheerful corsa to learn to drive in.
I drove the car myself and it seems ok , it is a 1998 corsa city with the 3 cylinder engine.
I plan to service it myself and give it a good going over.
Is there anything I should look for in particular?..ie; what are the known problem areas on this model?
All info much appreciated

I had a Corsa similar age as a loan car once and thought it was great. I actually bought a Combo van (Corsa based, essentially) because I like the car so much. When that was written off by a stupid woman I bought another. I had no problems with either van other than the digital clock and temp display fading. The earlier van clocked up 165000 miles with no probs at all. On the diesels the sump is known to rust causing oil leaks.

Timing chain rattle/wear is the weakest spot. Engine sounds noisy at tick over when the chains worn

when you change the oil, remove the filter at the same time that the sump plug is out, this gets more oil out ,[applies to the 3 cylinder only] check front and rear springs for breaks, [rears commonly break at top of spring , look out for "pigs tail "at end of spring] check handbrake cable for frays at axle cable guide [ plastic/nylon slide] cover the cable here with grease, the front flexible brake hoses corrode at the point where they join the caliper, if theyre not too heavily corroded then wire brush and coppaslip,
lubricate the bonnet safety catch they seize,
cant think of anything else at the mo ?
