serviced every 10k by ford dealership, will ask them tomorrow what oil they use, zetec 1.9tdi 85kw in log book, am only an elderly lady, cannot remove engine cover at the moment.
|
|
1.9 85kw is a PD engine code AJM or AUY according to my records, check code on top of cambelt cover they could have used the wrong oil
|
I'm beginning to see a few more PD engine failures as the miles build up - almost all so far, traceable to the use of the wrong oil, thanks largely to the unclear data provided by VAG.
The failures are interesting and not what one might expect. The wide central cam with its roller follower which actuates the unit injector "PD" is generally undamaged. The valve actuating cams and followers are another story - usually a complete mess, as are the camshaft (shell) bearings.
The explanation for this is that the valve cams are in fact very narrow - designed thus so as to leave space for a wide "PD" cam between each pair. It seems that VAG played "safe" with the unit injector cams in terms of pressure loading, at the expense of the loadings on the valve actuation cams. Being good engineers, they tested it thoroughly, specified a special oil which would cope with the pressures and released the product. The rest is history.
These engines are expensive to fix when this happens because the parts prices are high - pattern part makers please move in. The use of 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00 oil according to engine duty is absolutely essential with these engines - any other oil, however good you might think it is, will give cam and follower problems. Correctly treated, these engines will run to high mileages without trouble.

Hi, i have a 1.9tdi 110bhp seat alhambra............ can you please tell me what fault this causes, and roughly how much is the cost of repair.......... my engine sounds very "tappety" although it runs fine, does this fault need to be repaired?
|
Unfortunately, a "tappety" sound is often the first sign of impending trouble. This leads to excessive smoke, rough running and a loss of power. The tappety sound is caused by the wear on the followers and cams being so great that the hydraulic tappets cannot take up the clearance. The surface condition of these components will be spalled with metal flakes, adding to the noise.
If you are in any doubt, remove the cam cover and have a look - it's only a 10 minute job. Inspect the valve operating cams - they should have a mirror finish on their lobes. If you are in trouble, it will be obvious - the whole lot will look a mess with metal flakes everywhere.
£500 and 3 hours' labour will usually cover this problem unless the head is damaged. Have you any reason to think that the incorrect oil may have been used?

The problem i have is that i had the cambelt and major service done approx 2 months ago ( at the same time) , the noise has gradually got worse, i am not a mechanic, but your spec on the oil change , may ring true, if they used a standard diesel oil and not the exact type for my engine, could this be the problem?, i am not having any smoke or power loss....... i am sure on my vehicle documentation it does have the PD abbreviation on it.
I am thinking of taking it back to the garage to see what they say, i will probably be fobbed off and still have to pay.
The annoying thing is that i had a 3 month warranty on the vehicle which expired a few days before i noticed the problem.

Hi, i have a 1.9tdi 110bhp seat alhambra............
The 110 bhp engine is not a PD type diesel and so is not affected in the same way

Don't know what year yours is; all 2000-on Galaxies, Sharans and Alhambras are PD.

My reply was to ifty above, presuming the quoted 110bhp is correct

Sorry; you're quite right. It was late and I missed the fact that there are now two different vehicles on the same thread.

Thats the problem with this forum, some posts are not on chronalogical order and its easy to get confused, especially as we try and use quotes to a minimum

thank you and everybody for all the help here. Mechanic will investigate later today. By the way,Ford are "coming back to me" with the correct oil recommended for these engines. Maybe we will all have a laugh when they do. But I will NOT be holding my breath for the right answer.

Have just heard from Ford Main Dealership, they say 5w/40 oil is recommended. Hows that?

>>Have just heard from Ford Main Dealership, they say 5w/40 oil is recommended. Hows that?
pretty much useless.
If it is a PD then quoting viscosity is not enough. It needs to meet the appropriate VW standard.
I would ring the nearest vw dealer and get confirmation of the correct oil (using your engine code). then go back to wherever has been servicing it and ask what they used.
|
vw say yes, we need their vw 505 oil, but in the same breath they say the 5/40 will do. I am of course only going to us the 505, 506 or 507, when I can find it. It does seem pretty sad though that a vw dealership will still say the "wrong oil" will do.
Even sadder is the fact that as a taxi co. I own another of these galaxys, coming up to 110K, hoping a complete oil change, to vw oil, and possibly flushing the system will stop this one going the same way. No tappity noise so far.

There's nothing wrong with using a 5W-40 viscosity oil - providing that it's one that meets VW's "505/506/507" etc. PD specification level.
There are many 5W-40 semi-synth oils that do meet the specs; most are produced specifically for the PD engine. You'll need to ask the Ford dealer exactly what make and type of 5-40 that they use for it and them see if that one is a PD spec oil.
Most garages have bulk tanks and a Ford garage would normally use a 5W-30 semi-synth conforming to Ford's "913" spec for most of their servicing work. A 5W-40 would be too thick for most petrol Fords.
One would hope that, seven years on, it had got through to them that the PD Galaxy needs it's own special oil and they would keep a stock. One would hope......

They may have been speaking shorthand. Important distinctions between the oil are not flagged up by the VW jargon! 505.01 is a 5w/40 oil, but 505.00 (also 5w/40) is not, definitely not, for the PD. 506 comes in 506.00 and 506.01 versions: the .01 is what you need for the PD if on variable oil change intervals, and is 0w/30 viscosity or similar. The 507 will suit all the VAG PD diesels - at a price!
|
Gentlemen (mainly), please do not shorten the designation of VAG approved oils as this will result in yet more confusion in what is for some owners, a fairly desparate situation. They are 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00 only according to duty.
I have spoken of my disapproval of VAG's use of engineering specification numbers for servicing purposes. It seems our friends the Americans have been having no end of trouble with this and have been wrecking engines by filling them with their "finest fully synthetic" of whatever brew they think fit. If any of this psychology has rubbed off within the Ford organisation, there will be quite a few Ford serviced Galaxies out there with valve actuation problems.
Go carefully with this engine and all will be well.

You're absolutely right on all counts.
Sorry. Slapped wrist here...

A depiction of the difficulties in the US is given here: forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=172713 BTW, I have referenced 659Be valuable post. Some in the US positively advocate untested oils for the PD, maybe on the basis that its unAmerican to use OEM standards:) Its a pity VAG are unconcerned about the confusion on oils for the PD. Not to mention the dealers, both sides of the pond, who seem to be unable to absorb the technical bulletins. Perhaps that explains, partly, why VAG are going to common rail for the next generation of diesels.

young man, (I think), thank you so very much for all your advice over the last 24 hours. I now have an independant mechanic who has looked at the galaxy,(ford serviced every 10k), discovered exactly as explained by you lovely chaps, is following your advice(s) the the letter, and my galaxy will finally be fixed.
You might like to know that this follows on three weeks of ford and vw computer analysis, which have resulted in everything from turbo changes to cat changes at a cost in excess so far of 800 pounds.
My other galaxys will be inspected by the said mechanic during the next few days. I will try to find out exactly which oil the main dealer used on his services, although I doubt any recompense will be forthcoming.
I take my bonnet off to each and every one of you and thank you again so much for helping this old lady during what had become a nightmare.
