£2-3k car for motorways... - cottontop
Hi all,

Long shot just I'm just preparing myself should my N reg Golf Diesel Estate flop at its MOT next week. What would 2-3k in my pocket buy me if I was wanting to do 500 miles per week, mainly on motorways ?? It would need to be able to house our 2 dogs for travelling as well....open to any suggestions just make them sensible !!

Thanks in advance
Richard

406 HDi 110 2.0 estate.

Should get you a 2000 model with 100k miles.

I'd second that. I ran a 406 2.0 HDi [90] for 2 years, doing a minimum of 500 miles per week - it was faultless, comfortable, economical, and they're a good looking car as well.

I'd get the 110 bhp model if possible just for some extra overtaking impetus.

Be prepared for the Golf to need welding - we had one that age that looked great until up on a ramp. Needed loads doing.

You might also look at the Toyota Carina/Avensis - £3k gets you into the Avensis - read HJ in the CBCB as he seems to like them.

Primera. P11-P144 shape. 99-02. Will do 40mpg on a run (assuming 1.8 petrol) and has the japanese reliability. cam chain engine as well, ABS, aircon, and side airbags in the seats on this shape. pretty big as well should someone run into the back on you (fairly common on the M3/M4 corridor I hear if you are down that way).
Don't buy one that's been mini-cabbed in oblivion though.

ahhh from another thread in this forum relating to "the various merits of driving petrol cars or diesel cars" (i.e. petrol vs diesel) you wouldn't get me recommending a diesel unless one was doing 30k+ p.a.
500 miles/week equates to around 25k p.a. and at this price level one would only be able to purchase "old diesels" which may well go wrong and you can buy a lot of petrol for the £500-odd that HGF or a new turbo would cost.

anyway, there is an estate version of the P11-144 as well but they're nowhere near as common, and there is a diesel variant as well, but they will have of course been mini-cabbed into near-oblivion by now.

Omega 2.5 diesel estate facelift model.
Superbly comfortable load lugger with BMW 6pot diesel, albeit indirect injection.
The facelift models are quite reliable, loaded with toys & you can get one within your budget. Only problem maybe finding one without galactic mileage & with a good history. If you can go with petrol the 2.5v6 is super smooth & reasonably economical on a mway run, especially the auto due to high top gear and TC lockup.

Don't be afraid of diesel, the guys who do huge mileages...i.e taxis all over the country...mostly seem to use diesel. There are some good Passats around in diesel or petrol if you prefer for £2-3k
