My wife was surprised that no reminder for her road fund licence has been received, as her tax expires at the end of the month. I told her she can retax it online and went to work.
Later that day she phoned to say she could not retax it online as it kept rejecting the application, but could be retaxed using a V10. I said not to worry, you can download the V10 online, to which she said there was no link. Alright I would find the link on my computer and then print it off. Everytime I tried to print the V10 it locked my computer up and I had to reboot it, after ½ hour of this I gave up.
That evening I said not to worry I would get a V10 from the local Post Office and tax it the following day. The following morning I tried to get the V10 from my friendly Post Office, only to be told they no longer stock them as they can tax a car with the correct documents.
When I returned home last night and told my wife, she was very uncomplimentary about the whole system. She had telephoned the DVLA and after being transferred several times she finally spoke to someone about the problem she was experiencing. Only to be told her car was no longer registered to her!!!!!! No explination, but hopefully they are correcting their records and sending out the correct reminder immediately.
This morning I taxed the car on her documents, so it remains tax paid for another year. The strange thing was the lady in the Post Office said that last week many people could not use the online retax facility, she thought with the impending Budget they had pulled the system so dear Gordon could charge the new rates.
If only life was a simple as ........................................

It was working fine last weekend, with the new rates....
The paper reminder said £175, when I logged on it said £180.

I tried to renew my road tax online last July and failed because the website would not accept any financial payment. My insurance and MOT both had some considerable time to run before expiring.
In the end I went to the Post Office...:-(
It's the only website I've ever had problems with of this nature.

i would not be too worried by the online difficulties as they may have been just a blip, although strange that your pc was locking up. (a possibility is that it may be a problem down your end rather than the dvla end)
what i certainly would worry about are the two statements you make which seem to confirm that the car is no longer in your wife's name/address as the keeper. in your/her place, i would want to find out more - how/what/when of that event coming about.

Used the website late Feb 2007 with no problems. Easy peasy .. and well designed - even for a Gov't one!:-)

There is the rub - it is not a government site in the sense of Govt Bought & Run
but an IBM owned site that gets paid by the volume it processes.

According to the person she spoke to it had been corrected and a tax reminder was being sent. As of yesterday it had not been received, but if nothing arrives by the beginning of next week I will get her to chase it up again, this time in writing.

last year i got my brother in Devon to do the MOT on my bike as he had it in his garage and I wasn't due to collect it for a while and i needed to tax it......as it was the non computerised one he had to post it to me
the stingy little sod posted it with a 2nd class stamp, which took nearly a week, by which time the budget had been, which put the tax up
so he saved himself 10p or so, whilst i paid £2 more......he thought it was hilarious

artful dodger, don't forget that this efficient system is the basis for ANPR cameras. Your wife should not be surprised if she gets pulled!

Make sure that the number of previous owners is correct once this is resolved.
