P406 cutting out..help me Mr Moorey! - LanceP
Hi Andy....from me who used to give you platinum service at that dreadful motor factors

My X'reg 1.8 8v petrol Peugeot 406 manual, has developed a fault that causes it to cut out without any warning, no rough running, the engine just dies, as if you had turned the key off......leave it an hour, and it will restart.
Greenflag are tiring of me now so desperatley need advice. Failing that, do you cover the Chichester area? I'd rather pay somebody that I can trust than those bandits at Peugeot.
Have a suspicion that the immobiliser is poss at fault....only a suspicion though. Any known faults that spring to mind....anybody?

...it will run on tick over for about 5-10 mins before cutting out ...then take an hour before it will restart.....continuous turning over of the engine prompts the immobiliser fault to light on the dash...this could be unrelated though..?
My original thoughts were of tesco petrol, but it runs perfectly smoothly up until the point when it cuts out. it still has 1/4 tank of tesco fuel in, but as i said, no running problems.

I don't know these cars particularly well, but sounds temp related to me..?? Possibly crank sensor going O/C when it gets hot. Get a can of freezer spray and give the sensor a blast next time it stops and see if it comes to life..

will try the freezer spray....cant get it to cut out now though. had it running for 45mins....dont want to risk driving it though cos i know it will breakdown.

Have bought a crank sensor, but dont want to fit it until i can get it to stall and not restart, that way I'll know its fixed if it starts when I replace the sensor...does that make sense?

Need someone to come and read the fault code memory really, does anyone know of a good mobile Tune-up Service In Chichester area?

First things first, check the basics first ..is there a spark at the plug when the engine won't start ?

Problem solved, the 'double relay' was to blame, which is in the black box next to the ECU. I can now return the un-used flywheel sensor, leaving me with a bill of less than £35 for the relay.

Common problem I'm told, by the Peug mechanic who suggested it, saved me god knows how much money!!

Time to sell it and buy something a little more German I think...before it all starts going wrong...anyone fancy a nice shiny Peugeot.....?
