AutoGlym glass cleaner (the best product of its type I've ever used) plus application with kitchen roll followed by a big, soft cloth to wipe clean and leave sparklingly clear.
Exactly the same result with the windscreen.

The cleanest I ever saw the rear window in my old Fiesta was just after a local yob had lobbed a rock (from MY rockery) through it. The replacement was lovely and clean!

Thought the heater element was inside the glass?

B
no, it's on the surface on the inside. The Ford heated front screen element is, I think, inside. So when you clean the glass be gentle, don't use anything abrasive and it's a good idea to use a horizontal motion rather than vertical.
Other good tips include, buy a hatchback. It's a pain in a saloon.

Following a previous recommendation by Stuartl, I got some AutoGlym glass cleaner and it really is excellent.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend it, it even smells nice!!!
