What is the battery life on hybrid cars?

I recently read, to my surprise, the batteries on self-charging hybrids only last about five years. Then the owner has a big bill to replace the battery, that cost thereby negating any bonus they had been enjoying by having better mpg. As someone considering the purchase of some sort of four year old (probably Toyota) hybrid car, I was a bit concerned I might have a £2,000 or £3,000 bill for a new battery a year or so into ownership. Have I been misinformed?

We're not aware of many hybrid batteries failing after five years. Toyota's warranty covers the hybrid battery for 10 years/100,000 miles. This can be extended for up to 15 years with regular hybrid health checks (carried out as part of a service at Toyota dealers). Toyota is one of the most reliable car brands, regularly performing very highly in our annual Satisfaction Index. It's also one of the most experienced manufacturers of hybrid vehicles - many early Prius models are still on their original battery.
