Ford Mondeo 1.7TD, 1998 - Slipping Clutch.

From a bit of background reading I gather this is a common fault.

Can a slipping clutch be adjusted? or is it just a case of replacement?

Currently the clutch is engaging at about 2cm from the top of the clutch pedal's travel.
When the turbo kicks in the clutch slips. Not a huge problem, just a slight annoyance.

Can the point at which the clutch engages, relative to the pedal postion, be adjusted to give the clutch more chance of engaging properly?

2nd Question:

Juddering, steering when on full lock? Is there something that can be adjusted or is it something that needs replacing?

The car only cost me £500, so I'm not looking to spend big wads of cash on it.

All help and advice gratefully received

Clutch needs replacing. Steering judder may be worn driveshafts.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I will try to live with it as long as possible,

Will it just stop working one day? or will it become gradually worse?

It will become gradually worse. Slipping will overheat it and increase the wear rate. You may be able to extend its life by accelerating very gently, but then it may let you down when you need to rush out of trouble....

If money is a big concern you may be able to get away with just replacing the pressure plate, but unless you're doing it yourself this would be a false economy (provided the rest of the car is worth keeping, that is). I don't suppose a Mondeo clutch kit with thrust bearing costs an absolute fortune.

Someone on here the other week paid a Ford Main Dealer £600 to have the clutch changed on their Mark 2 Mondeo, which appears to be about the going rate.

I'm afraid to have to say that these cars are frequently scrapped when needing the clutch changing because it's such an expensive job, in the same way that many automatics are similarly scrapped due to failure of the autobox which is a very expensive item.

These northerners are supposed to be cheap, no knowledge, no ties etc

Whilst I would never drive a Mondeo - far too lower class for an aspiring Bristol owner such as myself - I understand that a local independent will supply and fit a Mondeo clutch for £300ish.

Thanks v.much for all your advice.

Is there anyway to adjust where the bite point is with regard to the pedal position? I don't like it so close to the top.

It's a shame clutch replacement is so costly, the car is in very good nick. Thankfully I don't need to do too much mileage, it was bought as a 'cheap-as-possible' second car for the household.

Why bother about it? The clutch is going to fail sooner rather than later anyway.

Phil, don't be alarmed. Try to find a good independent mechanic to do it for you. Probably half the main dealer cost and if you choose the right guy probably a better job.

It isn't easy to find the right guy, I know. But ask your knowledgeable local friends and consult this website. I think there's an HJ list of good mechanics. If you go to one of them and he's too busy or too dear, he may suggest someone who may be good.

If it's a nice car it's unnecessary to throw it away for a clutch. Some opportunist will put a clutch in it, polish it and sell it at a good profit. You might end up with something worse or a bid debt.

Cars need maintenance. A clutch is a disposable item. Grit your teeth, find a decent independent and spend the money.

(But please: don't blame me when something else needs doing, perhaps soon).

I know Mondeo clutches are expensive to fix, but do shop around for quotes. You may well get it sorted for £300-400 and if the rest of the car is in pretty good nick, it may well give you a few years motoring without further major expenditure. Mark 1/2 Mondeos are pretty solid cars, generally quite reliable and reasonably cheap and easy to fix unless the clutch goes. It's a shame Ford abandoned easy clutch changes when the Sierra was phased out.

what milage is it?, as they say a clutch is a maintenance item anyway. Why are these cars such a bargain? I think you have found out!

It's just run in at 135,500miles! A spring chicken.

I will have a look around. I have been recomended somewhere local so I'll be in touch with them. I may well spend the money at some point and get it fixed, but not right now.

Cheers for the advice.
