It is unusual on this Forum to answer a simple question in a simple manner, but I will do so below: .....
The objects that you can see are the bottoms of the rear dampers (shock absorbers). This design has been used on Transits for many years and has been carried over from Mark to Mark. They do not seem vulnerable to damage, in spite of appearences to the contrary, as I have never come across any examples of ones needing replacement. For normal road use the dampers are out of the way, because they are attached to the rear axle and maintain a constant gap above the road surface.
