Bought a car a few weeks back with a strong smell of tobbaco smell. Thought i'd be able to get rid of the smell by giving the seats a good clean or a good febreeze but the smell just returns-
Any tips to get that nasty smell rid of once and for all!!?

I think tobacco smells lovely. It's the smell of the smoke when people burn it that I can't stand.
I suspect this isn't too helpful. I'd maybe get a professional to valet the interior.

I did a forum search as this has been discussed before but couldn't find it. A lot of the smell will be in the headlining and that is a s*d to clean. Before spending a lot of money on a valet you could try a tip which was mentioned - keep a bag of grass cuttings in the boot for a while. It is getting round to grass cutting time and it won't cost anything to try this remedy. Also Neutradol has been mentioned; it comes as a spray and also a small sphere filled with a blue gel. This sits very neatly in a drinks holder near the handbrake on the centre console of my car. Wilkinsons (Wilco) have keen prices on Neutradol products BTW.

Allegedly putting a bale of hay in it, or a bucket of grass cuttings over night will help. I've never tried these, but they repeatedly come up as solutions to this problem.
When we were shopping for a car recently I turned down a few cars based on smell, some of smoke and one which had 3 air fresheners in it and still smelled like it had a rotten fish in it. I guess the dealer was hoping for a customer with no sense of smell for that one, it was so overpowering we were unable to even sit in it.

Neutradol /Oust - spray in car, in car vents, boot area etc etc.
Turn car on and leave it recycling with A/C on if you have it - say 10 mins..
Repeat a few times if really bad

...or Morrison's own brand at just 65p
Febreze is not so good for such purposes as it just masks the smell rather than kills it, in similar fashion to those air fresheners you plug into an electrical socket.

Its the headling that absorbs all the gunge you really need to clean it if possible, its a terrible smell to a non smoker was going to bid on a car recently till I opened the door.

Another little tip,
Although a lot of people clean the interior (headlining, seats, carpets, ) and empty the ashtray, it is suprising how many "forget" to stick the pipe of the vacuum cleaner into the recess where the tray sits, and waggle it around, there is often a fair old heap of ash and smelly stuff out of sight in there, that has been squeezed out of an over-full ashtray.

Borrow a couple of wet Labradors for the day and take them for a long journey. Stop off for a take-way Ruby on the way back, eaten inside the car. Ensure all windows shut, AC off and air set to recirculate during the exercise.
Rinse, and repeat as required.

Febreze is revolting. When I bought my house, the loo had a distinct smell. Somebody suggested I spray Febreze in it - it didn't improve the smell, so I sprayed more and more and more onto the carpet.
Eventually I realised that the revolting smell was of Febreze. Ugh.
