Hi,
I'm looking for a cable that I can connect to my Ipod that will charge the ipod AND also give me a 3.5mm output from the Ipod to plug into my 'Aux in' on my car.
IE, the cable needs to charge the ipod AND also carry a signal from the Ipod to the car radio via it's 'Aux In'. I assume that the 'charge' part of the cable will be in the form of a cigarette adaptor. I would really like to hard wire this into the car rather than be permantely in the cigarette lighter if possible.
Any help appreciated.

What sort of car and what type of radio we are not mind readers.

You can buy a cable to go from the headphone jack on the iPod to the 3.5mm "AUX" socket from any electrical retailer, in fact my iPod was supplied with such a cable. Similarly there are cables available to go from the cigarette lighter socket in the car to the accessory socket on the bottom of the iPod to charge the battery. I got mine from Amazon, it cost about 10 Euros.

OP, I'm not sure you're gonna be successful - or not easily anyway. I've got a 'headphone jack'-type cable that connects my iPod to my car radio. But it's just an 'aux' input that doesn't charge up the iPod.
Some cars these days have a USB-type socket; that enables connection to the radio (and should allow track selection, turn on/off, etc just like a remote CD changer) AND charge up the iPod, just like your PC does.
BMW and MINI dealers, for example, can change the simple jack connection to the pukka USB one, but I don't THINK it's as simple as just changing the end connection; something needs to be done at the head unit end as well.

BMW use the CD stacker unit input on the rear of the unit which has a 12v supply ,Mondeos are fitted with a jack socket in the glove compartment,I am using a cassette type system on my BMW at the moment works well or you could use one the radio units on Ebay for around a fiver.

Just had a unit fitted to the Jag. It plugs into the CD Changer port & gives 2 x Phono jacks, iPod lead & USB port.
Sits in the centre console so out of sight, works brilliantly with my USB unit from Dixons.

Ah, yes, there you are. USB into CD changer port. Makes sense.

Might depend on what car you have got. On my Saab the original systems available were a cable which piggybacks the CD changer connection, but the head unit has to detect there is a changer fitted. With no changer (I havent got a CD changer) the head unit doesnt get a signal so doesnt play the ipod.
So check this out if going for this solution, but would be just my luck if it is only OE Clarion systems that work this way! There is now a more sensible adaptor available for mine but its £100 so I'm sticking with a iTrip for now..

I've been away for the week so only seen this thread. To charge the IPOD you'll need to connect the dock connector to a power source and the most obvious is the 12v power socket in the car. But another cable.
Depending on the version of iPOD the cable needed will vary. iPODs for the past few years can charge via USB so plugging a USB-to-cigarette socket cable in will charge. My earlier iPOD will only charge via Firewire via the dock connector (series 3 iPOD?) though.

Check out the Monster range of chargers/cables. They do a car charger that includes a line-out connection which gives a much better output than the headphone socket.
