Topping up oil...Ford Focus

Topping up oil...Ford Focus - arnold2
Is it critical to top-up with the same oil spec ? My Focus is spec'd as 5W-30, but I have 10W-40 - will I damage the engine ?

It is accepted wisdom never to put anything other than 5W/30 in a Zetec engine. These engines are unusually fussy.

Bought some 5/30 @ costco last week (Chevron) @ £11.xx for 4 ltrs

Used to buy Castrol but is getting so expensive - Chevron meets the SAE standards and is about 50% of the price

Hi, Yes its *best* to stick to the recommended oil, but it wont kill the engine if you top up with 10w40.
Why degrade protection for the engine though over such a low cost item?
