P 406 HDI (52) 96k I have a noise in the gearbox which may be caused by distortion in the fly wheel.
The garage has quoted £800 to strip out the clutch and replace parts. Is that a fair £?

If that is the dual-mass flywheel coming apart; [110hp?] drive it very gently to the garage, or you'll suddenly develop a big gap twixt engine and gearbox.
Depending on your area, that's a pretty ball-park figure for the job. The proper parts aren't exactly cheap.

When the clutch was done on my Xantia before I bought it, it cost £548 at a local garage. So I guess it depends exactly what parts they're quoting for. I believe that Valeo produce a normal (non dual mass) flywheel and clutch for the HDi.

colleague recently spent £900 having their clutch and fly wheel changed on their 406 HDI (53) 56k

I had a 407 with random gearbox noise, they said it was the flywheel assembly, cost £800 on warranty but the noise was still there, turned out to be a driveshaft gaiter after 3 weeks and 2 gearboxes in pug!!
Check first!!
