What happened to this thread? I cannot believe my contribution upset anybody. I posted a prfessional reply and it disappeared very soon afterwards. There is nothing in this post that promotes pirated software.
Without you specifying what car and what type of chip it is difficult for anybody to give a definitive answer.
Remember if it is a proper replacment chip that contains pirated software it still only costs a few dollars to make! The original supplier charges hundreds of £ to recoup the development cost. No different from pirated CDs with copies of Windows or other overpriced MS software except that the development cost has to be recovered from a relatively small number of units. However the backup will not be available.
I am surprised if no one is actively marketing pirate copies of the more reputable devices. It is not rocket science, and the risks of legal action probably remote if sourced offshore. And VERY profitable.
But it is buyer beware, you are just as culpable as any user of unlicensed software and it would be interesting to know if FAST have taken an active stance in pursuing people with 'embedded' software.

That is an ineresting concept of protection. It would stop straightforward copying and distribution. However it would still be possible for a smart hacker to use the enhanced mapping parameters embedded into a chip with the validation codong removed. Is Bluefin manufacturer approved? If not it implies that their software is written by somebody who has hacked the ECU code!

I wouldn't dream of it. By the way, did I mention how excellent the forum moderation is?

Quite likely.
When Volvo introduced the Bosch ME7 based ECUs on their cars there was a delay whilst the code was "broken" and then a profusion of tuning options appeared that change settings.
I tuned my Volvo V70 2.4T with Swedish company BSR's PPC tuning method (handheld device that reads the original map via the OBDII diagnostics port and stores it as a backup before replacing with new map) and similarly to Bluefin this too is tied to my car and my car alone via ECU and VIN number. Of course this can be broken by anyone determined enough and with the skills to do so but it stops basic "sharing" of one box between multiple cars.
BTW - the best £690 I ever spent on a car "accessory".
