Rover 214si - Peter Stott
I bought an L reg(Aug 93) 214si (110k) recently from an auction, for my
son.
Clutch was slipping so had new clutch plate and gear box oil seal fitted.
Thought all would be OK but then found this problem.
When ticking over the engine starts to "hunt".
It goes from 1000revs up to 1500 then drops back to under a 1000 then up again and so on.
Have had the engine set up on a tuner, this showed no problems.
The ecu has been checked and is OK.
Cylinder head gasket has been replaced.
I'm told it has a new catalytic converter.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Re: Rover 214si - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)
Classic symptom of a blocked vacuum pipe between the inlet manifold to the ECU. Locate the ECU (next to battery) and carefully disconnect the rubber vac hose from the unit. Follow the hose along via any oil traps to the inlet manifold and disconnect there also. Preferably with a compressed air line blow the tube clear of obstructions, you will usually get a gob of thick oil initially, keep blowing until clear. Reconnect then start the engine(without touching the throttle) and let it idle and with luck all should be OK. In extreme cases the pipe inside the ECU gets blocked and cleaning this is more tricky. ON NO ACCOUNT blow directly into this tube as you will wreck the MAP sensor within. Instead with the air line blow across the top of the tube to draw any oil out of the sensor.
Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Has it been set up on the proper MGR tuning/diagnostic equipment?
