when drivng along in the alhambra it ocassionally makes a "whizzing jet engine type sound" obviously a lot quieter but still audible. when we pull over and switch off the engine it continues for a few minutes, a bit like a cooling fan does, It doesnt alter with the revs and it seems to come from under the car towards the rear.
It also sometimes ticks, the tick also is not in time with the revs.
There doesnt seem to be any loss in peformance, but something is not right.
We, our local regular garage and local exhaust center are scratching our heads.
Has any one else had this problem or have any incling what it might be?

Have you got an Eberspacher diesel-burning auxiliary rear heater fitted? Under the N/S/R floor; hidden by a shield? Sounds like it's working fine.
|
Is it possible to add these as an aftermarket item? It would be very handy...

Yes; but it's quite a system - even has it's own ECU and fault-codes. Probably best sourced from a scrapped one - could cost a fortune in separate bits.

Thanks for that.
Is this Eberspacher to warm the diesel quicker in cold weather? (peformance related)
or for something else?

See www.eberspacher.co.uk and you'll get an idea of their products. [Nothing under "auxiliary heater" in your handbook?] Yours is to boost the heat in the rear as idling diesels don't produce enough heat to warm such a large space. It only works when the rear is colder that desired - i.e. in cold weather.

Eberspacher do make a heater to heat the heater water before or while you start the engine. So do Kenlowe and other manufacturers.

Webasto is another maker.
