My bonnet catch seems to have disconnected or broken at the engine side of the cable!
Any ideas as to how to get into it please!!??

are you sure the cable has broken? the catch itself on mine has gone with the cold whether, all i do is pull the handle, then get a pair of pliers and pull the black catch in the bonnet badge until it's fully out then both lift and pull on it at the same time till it comes open

There is no tension on the lever in the footwell? I can get the lever in the grill and pull that out but nothing seems to happen. Do you have tension on the lever?
Phoned Audi and they said I will have to take the tray off the bottom and get up from underneath. Have you ever taken the undertray off? There seem to be 3 fixings at the front end but then I'm stuck/
Thanks for the response

The undertray is fixed at the front (screws and one 10 AF nut) and in the wheelarches by 1/4 turn plastic fastners - I use a right angle screwdriver to turn these, although you could just put the wheels on lock. There are 2 of these each side. At the back of the undertray, there are further "screws" - I forget how many, but it's pretty straightforward. When replacing the undertray, remember that it slots in under part of the bumper at the front. Together with a limited ground clearance, this is not the most inspired piece of automotive design, particularly as there is no flap for the sump plug.
As far as your release cable goes, have you had the timing belt changed recently? There is a coupler in the cable which has to be parted when the lock carrier is placed in the "service" position to change the belt. Maybe they didn't clip this together properly - it's in a lozenge shaped plastic housing and sits under the plenum chamber cover.
I hope you get it open without damage to the radiator - it's a bit tight in there. I'm going to loop a piece of wire onto the release lever and tie it up somewhere invisibly accessible on my B5 in the light of your problem.

Thanks for the info.
If I ever get to it I will probably do the same with the looped wire!
The chap I spoke to at Audi said that the 1.9tdi was not the worst so I'm hoping for some room once the tray has gone.

The wife's Audi 80 had what we thought was a broken cable ---- no tension when you pulled the lever in the footwell. Turned out that thecable was not broken and the lever housing had come away in the footwell. Just reseating the lever housing cured the problem. I know the 80 is an older design but worth checking as we couldn't tell just by pulling lever - had to get down in footwell and look at it.

All done now. The cable had come away at the catch end under the bonnet. After getting underneath I was able to (blindly fumbling!) just reach and luckily pushed the cable back in. Full stretch working from the underneath offside toward the middle of the top of the bonnet.
Thanks for all the advice.
