Hi,
just driving the kids home from school half an hour ago and the car stalled as I pulled in to the drive. Now it won't drive at all, forward or back.
The car is a P reg 1.8 RT by the way....
The engine runs ok, but there's now a rattle/grind when the clutch is not depressed (even in neutral). If I depress the clutch, the noise stops after a second or two. If I put it into gear and try to drive all I get is very loud crunching/grinding noise...... I can change gears fine, which puzzles me.
Does it sound like the clutch has failed totally, or, hopefully, something cheaper?
Here's hoping it's not £300 :(

driveshaft maybe?

if it is the driveshaft(s) that'd be great....just been quoted £337 for a new clutch.
Not overly hopeful though, as the grinding/crunching is still there when in neutral, and the driveshafts wouldn't be trying to spin would they?

'Does it sound like the clutch has failed totally?' - yes, very possibly drive plate failure. However, noise but no drive indicates it could well be an internal failure in the gearbox,. especially as depressing the clutch reduces the noise. Either way the gearbox needs to come out, at which point clutch condition will be obvious.

Cheers for the reply John
Either way it's sounding expensive....just off the phone to my local mechanic who is quoting £110 labour plus parts (not too bad), but he is also thinking it's gearbox internals...possibly differential.
I've only owned the car a fortnight and it had the gearbox replaced 3 month ago......argh.

You want to ask yourself if a 10 year old Laguna is worth spending a couple of hundred £s on! Sell on ebay as spares or repair your best bet and buy something Japanese with the proceeds!
|
True..... but I think it's worth spending a couple of hundred on as it wasn't expensive to buy, and is a decent car (well, compared to my usual anyhow).

suggest you get the end of the gearbox taken off and have the 5th gear nut checked for tighteness ,very common on this car for it to undo ,hours job i think ?(never done one mind) get mechanic to do it where it is
|
cheers for the tip, I'll mention to the mechanic when I get them to take a look.

Well it's the gearbox that is shot....most likely final drive....
Been quoted £450 to repair form one place, and £355 another (with me supplying a gearbox).....guess what's going on ebay tomorrow for spares/repair!
Just my luck as ever.
