And me too. Far superior to most, worth doing without an etid button,, pooh - edit button :-)

Great idea, But IMHO would definately need to be time limited ( 10 minutes?).
Would not want this great forum to degenerate to the level of another well known forum where members have been known to gang up on visitors they dont like and then neatly edit the offensive comments out of their posts.

Personally I consider the ease of use of the forum software and the clean interface on this site to be one of its attractions. Ed.
I totally fail to see how:
Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Edit this message
is any more complicated than:
Reply to this message | Report message as offensive

I've got an edit button. My son delved into Stephen Khoo's arcane programming and - voila - there it is.

I can't, PG has sworn me to secrecy under threat of a sound thrashing. So if I don't tell you, I receive a sound thrashing from PG. Seems fair enough.
Edit: have a look at the source code for the image of HJ's hat (top left on your screen, hover the mouse and right click).

So, either way you get a sound thrashing from PG? Chance would be a fine thing!
Sweet dreams!!

It's dead easy. Spot a post you want to reply to, use wordpad to compose a reply, log on and cut and paste. You've got loads of chances to edit - and the smelling mistake will still be there for all to see.

AND it avoids the frustration of finding out, when you attempt to "post this message" that you have been timed out and wiped out.

Without wishing to stoke the "any mod has to pay for itself" argument, I too vote for a time limited edit button; I have lost count of how many times I read my post to check it, but read what I want to read and spot the typo afterwards.
Another forum I use has such a feature; edit once within five minutes without trace. Edit twice, or at any time over five minutes, and the "last edited at" legend displays along with what was changed. It's done properly and is clean, fuss free, and easy on the eye. It actually aids the flow of the forum too since it removes all the "what I wanted to say" and "Mods, please change..." entries. No doubt a record of what's changed is available to the mods too because any flame wars get put to bed before they even start.

Exactly, its not a case of being able to edit your posts to remove comments without trace, its to edit the mistakes out afterwards. Like SjB says, a legend is displayed at the bottom posts to say when the post was edited. Most other mainstream forums use this system nowadays and I just wonder why we don't.

Another forum I use allows editing of posts until someone replies to it and then that post is locked.

This is still also open to error as someone could be replying while the OP is editing - especially so if the replying person quotes the OP's post before the edit is saved.

Another forum I frequent had an edit button, but I've noticed that a really fast edit does not invoke the "edited at hh.mm" subscript, which is much the same as being suggested above.

Edit schmedit.
This is the internet. It's full of mistakes and idiocies.
I find it entertaining to be edited or censored for reasons I always understand, even when I don't really agree with them.
How many forums do people frequent? This is the only one I've ever frequented.
Tchah!

Edit button?
At this moment in time, err, no.
Apart from the cost involved for a software re-write, it's already been mentioned by some people above,
That being it's open to misuse - even if you do have a time out period before no longer being able to edit it. On some of the other forums I browse more often than not no one bothers to fill in the "reason for editing box" - the only clue you have that a post has been edited is a 'last edited at xx:xx on xx/xx/xxxx (where x is the date / time stamp).
Also the reasons have previously been discussed why you can't have edit buttons ( ::hints at the forum search button, which you do have :: )
Anyway, what perks am I and the fellow moderators going to have left if you all get to have edit buttons as well ;o)

I'm always eager to learn, so what are idiocies?

Plural of idiocy-
noun [C or U]
a stupid action, or stupidity

Local Yokel - That'll probably be because in the short interim period between creating and editing the post nobody has viewed it and hence the editing has had no material effect.

I have done this for years, but it still doesn't help solve problems like the the one I just typed (read carefully), or where cut and paste to change the "flow" ends up with words left behind or changed context. We are humans. These errors will always happen, to greater or lesser degrees, depending on the temperament, patience, and perceptiveness of the poster.
