Am i being unrealistic?

I've just driven back from Norfolk having visited rellies and on the way up enjoyed empty straight A roads, where you could get a move on... and the odd car/lorry that didn't was easily depatched as it was a gloriously clear sunny day with loads of vision...

on the way back however was a different story completely.........dark, no street lights and i don't know the roads.... however if the car in front would only switch their main beam on on bits where there is no one coming, i might be able to see the road and judge whether i could overtake

unbelievable the amount that just don't bother............ inconsiderate and ignorant of the car in front....or do i have to accept that i've just got to match their 45/50mph mph on a national and be more patient.

I have my opinion, but would welcome others

No you're not - it irritates me on deserted duals as well where cars travelling in the opposite direction flash like mad at you when you're on main beam for nanosecond longer than you should be., I was taught to avert my eyes to the nearside to avid being dazzled by oncoming vehicles. It irritates me on country roads as well where cars bimble along in the dark as if its an alien country. This place is full of townies !

oh dear...... can i be an honorary 'rural'......... i was born there honest.......it's just that i've lived for more years as a townie than i did as a yokel

same as me !

That was aimed at my neck of the woods not the BR !

On a competence basis over half of drivers should never have been given a licence but no politician would ever suggest such a thing!

IMHO the current driving test should be regarded as basic, with a requirement to pass a much more rigorous test every 5 years thereafter.

It's very sad but the safest drivers are those who assume that most other drivers are idiots!

"unbelievable the amount that just don't bother............ inconsiderate and ignorant of the car in front."

Have I read this incorrectly or are you recommending driving on full beam whilst following another vehicle?

yes, i mean that if i'm following someone using my dipped headlights, i'd like them to select main beam, so that i can see to overtake......(and presumbaly they would be able to see the road better as well)

"Oi don't loike goin' farster than 45, it be too dark."

Move over to the overtaking position to take a look when appropriate, main beam plus spots and progress as necessary.

It has been a few years, but the A17/47 was a fearsome night drive, dykes everywhere, dips to conceal HGVs, bollards in the middle of the road and that bit where the road loops round a small copse through which oncoming headlights can be seen in winter, fortunately there is a gateway and dirt track to accept those unfortunate enough to think that the road was straight.

tempting i'll admit.........but........... don't want it on my conscience if i sent an old biddy spinning off through a field, because i've burnt her retinas out in her door mirror

Is this where the 150W spotlight-mounted-on-the-driver's-door is required? I've seen this on some yokelmobiles and assumed it was for shooting vermin, perhaps there is an alternative use?

Yes, I agree, I usually move to the right and switch mine on if I think the road is clear. You would think they would see the effect of your and think wow, I'll try mine, but they don't.

I also don't like these people coming the other way, as you never know they're coming until you have blinded them with your own main beams, as you don't get that tell-tale bright haze from theirs on the crest of a hill or from around a bend,

Yes! They probably wonder why your lights are so effective. Although - in reality - they probably don't notice.

I wish I was so lucky as to follow traffic at 45mph. Soon as the late afternoons get dark in the Peak District, speeds drop to 35mph with frequent dabs of the brake pedal just to make sure.

This thread came home to me as I was er travelling home tonight. Car in front was on main beam on a rural A road, no opposing traffic, I was on dipped beams behind him as he took a left hander at a healthy appropriate speed caught a glimpse of shadow/shape in his lights, it was a cyclist with no lights on, the advance warning gave me plenty of time to avoid swerving. Nice driving from him, idiot on the bike.
