Lot of white smoke on starting and general lack of performance could well be an injector concern;could well be a "hosing" injector;ie. one with an incorrect spray pattern.

That could also explain poor idle where the turbo should have no effect.

Is it a TD or a TDI tho' neither were particularly slow
All diesels are 'I',that is injected,sticking an 'I' on the back is just a sales gimmick.White smoke could be an injector problem,timing or knackered engine.Does it burn oil as well?If so it would point to the latter.

Ford at that time offered three engines in the Escort family of cars/vans;a "D"60ps.-a"TD"75ps and a "TDI" 90ps.. In other words a diesel,a Turbodiesel and a Turbodiesel intercooled;the "I" in this case standing for intercooled.

White smoke can be caused by an injector "hosing" which means that the injector does not inject with an atomized spray pattern but injects the fuel like water out of a hose.This will result in partial combustion which will reduce power,create white smoke(unburnt fuel) and a poor idle.All of these fit the reported symptoms.

Some general information:
All UK Escort TD's (excluding Escort vans) used the 90PS intercooled version of the engine. The 75PS unit was used in the vans as mentioned before, and the smaller Fiesta. All Ford turbodiesels of this era are simply badged "TD" (there is no i)
Performance should be very good. For all its roughness and noise, this is quite a lively engine in the lightweight Escort.if it feels sluggish it almost certainly indicates a fault.

The Fiesta of that time was never available turbocharged(right thro' to the end of it's life);there was no space to fit the turbo-conversions were available but did not meet Ford's requirements for servicing, accessibility etc.It was always 60ps.I never said TDI appeared on the back.There was however a TDX shown on the back for a very short period.When the TDI engine appeared in 1992,there was a "special edition" offered called the TDX-originally planned to be available in all body styles(I know,I ordered an Estate-when it went into production it was only available as a 5-door).Most were finished in Pacifica Blue-a colour not used on Fords before or since-not your usual powder metallic but a flake metallic-looked awful till the sun hit it.

Sorry - I meant the later Fiesta (96 on) which used the naturally aspirated and non-intercooled Endura-DE and later Endura-DI developments of the turbo engine (fatter cambelt and new cover design on the DE, and Direct injection / chain driven pump / shorter cambelt and drive-by-wire throttle on the DI - also known as TDDi in the Focus)
I remember the TDX well - I sold several hundred of them. Went like absolute missiles when you were used to the gutless 60PS naturally aspirated version. Basically an LX with stickers on it, a "special" colour and introduced to raise the profile of the new engine (got its own brochure and marketing collateral).
Customers reacted with mixed impressions. All loved the performance. Many couldn't live with the racket.

Must have been a huge secondhand demand as well-nine months later my local dealer contacted me offering a 1.6 petrol Escort-new,lower repayments and a £1,000 cashback-I paused long enough to ask what colours-subsequently I wished I still had the TDX but I eventually replaced it with a1995.5 Turbo diesel Estate-the one with the revised rear suspension and body-an excellent car.

thanks for the many replies, sorry I couldn't post back earlier!
It's simply badged 'Escort TD' but indeed it is fitted with an intercooler. It was running rought a month or two ago, after the garage treated it with a diesel additive (it was called liqui molli I think, German stuff) it was running much smoother.
After not using the car for a week, when I did the problem had reared its ugly head again. It's generally pretty rough on idle, fair bit of smoke on start up which sometimes clears up, sometimes doesnt (only ever notice it when at a stand still though). the car itself has never seemed that nippy, certainly not before 2500 revs when I asummed the turbo kicks in (I've owned it for just over a year). Now, however there doesn't seem to be any pep at all. And I'm pretty sure theres quite a bit of resonance when driving which wasn't there before. I'm not losing any water and I havent noticed a drop in oil either.
From what I've read of the replies Jc2's comments certainly sound like a perfect match. Any idea what this will cost me to get fixed?

I may or may not be right;what I would suggest is that you talk to a local diesl specialist not a dealer and tell him your concerns;I would expect him to suggest an injector service or an exchange set of injectors.Simple job to change them on a Ford(15 mins.)but a special socket is required.
