I am after a 530d sport auto
has anyone ever considered pretending to be a motor dealer and calling up their local main dealer and asking them to contact them about any part exs on a particular vehicle?
I was wondering if I could call up my local dealer and pretend that I was looking out for a 530d for a customer and that if they got any part exchanged that are too many miles and too old for the used programme to lmk
do you think thats possible?

While not in the motor trade, I would gues that dealers dispose of cars through regular contacts (or auctions) . I think they would see through you in an instant.

What he wore a sheepskin coat though - would that work?

why not just be honest and tell them the truth. they may still be able to find 1.
Normally more cars to get rid of than most traders want!
depends on the area probably but in this area it wouldnt upset anyone (unless you wanted to buy regularly) and dealer may benefit by few quid more than normal.
But, repeat, tell them the truth, so no toes get trodden on.

Bascially a dealer will want to get rid of the car as quickly as possible for the best price - no matter who buys it.
The 'fly in the ointment' is that people who are not bona fide traders may well take the car off his hands and then come back two weeks later with a list of defects that need rectifying. If selling to a non-trader then the dealer has far more in the way of obligations than if he sells to a trader. Writing 'Trade Sale' on the invoice does not absolve him of these obligations. I therefore think that many dealers will be disinterested in doing what you propose. They may of course be happy to sell to you 'retail', but at a much higher price.
The best place otherwise would be the auction room.

Having mentioned to a dealer that I was interested in a particular type of vehicle one of his salesmen turned up unannounced with one and this was a trip of about 30 m. each way-must have been a quiet week.

Did you buy, though? I'd say that's the kind of pro-active work dealers need to do these days, sometimes.

I'm good friends with sales folks at a local new car dealership... part of a monster chain that does about half of all the car makes in town.
Despite this friendship there is no chance of getting a trade car from them. The dealer take is as Aprilia says... they will not sell any car unless retail and warranted or through a contracted auction house. They will tell you where the car is going if you really want to chase it but you have to go and bid with all the others.
If you know exactly what you are looking for and do not mess folks about they might just give a private person looking to trade in a nod you'd be interested to arrange a direct private sale and hence reduce their *price to change* a bit.
20yrs ago all the big dealers were happy to get a phone call asking for something tatty or high mileage round the back... it's all changed now.
