I am soon to take a flight to Bristol and will be picked up - flight arrives at about 3pm. The airport website directions are M5 Jcn19, A369, A38. Is this the best way or is a better option to go to jcn 20 of the M5 and cut across country?

In a word probably not. If you want to avoid Bristol would go further down to J21 and go up the A370. The route from J20 isn't too bad- but is twisty country roads to Yatton, which can be slower than coming off at Weston. If come off at J21 go up the A370 then turn right at Brockey (3rd set of traffic lights you'll go through- in a very pretty wooded area).
Bit of a quandary really- the Airport directions probably aren't too bad, not driven the A369 to many times. Generally from J19 to J21 would be 10- 15 minutes, then J21 to Airport 15-20 mins light traffic- 30 mins fairly heavy.
Don't think there would be too much in it.

If you are being picked up I assume the driver knows the area so why worry about it. Regards Peter

Pete D - never assume it makes an ass out of 'u' and me!
1) It's my wife who is picking me up - her mum lives in Cardiff and she is going to stay for a week before I join her. She has never been to Bristol Airport.
2) I will be driving back to Cardiff and know from experience that recommended routes are often not the best, so I'm always welcome to hear of viable alternatives. I know Bristol suffers from traffic problems so if I can avoid going near the city centre that's a bonus.
Thanks to all others who have replied.

Assuming A369 is the Portway under the Clifton Suspension Bridge then I would take that though once over the Cumberland Basin swing bridge follow the signs for A370 (south - Long Ashton bypass) rather than A38 then 1/2 mile after the dual carriage way section of the A370 take a left through Barrow Gurney towards the A38, right onto the A38 then a couple of miles to the airport.

I knew there would be a good reason. Could you have not flown into Rhoose, ( Cardif Internation Airport ) Thank Dave. Regards Peter

Hi Cheddar- is not same road. A369 is south of the river on top of the hill opposite Portway (A4), but does come out on Cumberland Basin. The 370 would be the fastest route from there. The 369 that drops into Bristol can get quite congested- and can take a bit of time to get down to the swing bridge.
Equally the 370 from J21 can be a pig when busy.

Of course the A4, the A369 is the one from Portishead/Gordano which is J19, daveyjp needs to come off at J18 onto the A4 Portway under the Clifton Suspension Bridge, once over the Cumberland Basin swing bridge follow the signs for A370 then 1/2 mile after the dual carriage way section of the A370 take a left through Barrow Gurney towards the A38, right onto the A38 then a couple of miles to the airport.
Regards.

Which ever way she goes, it should not be too bad with the traffic. But on your return journey be prepared to meet traffic in the City as alot of places finish work at 4.00pm and the school brigade will be in motion.

A minor point, when we arrange to pick anyone up from Bristol, we have an unwritten agreement that the passenger rings us when they are through baggage collection and heading for the exit. We park up in a layby a couple of miles up the A38 towards Bristol and head for the pickup point after the phone call. The security staff are not keen on anyone waiting about in the pickup/drop off zone.

"The security staff are not keen on anyone waiting about in the pickup/drop off zone." If you mean the lane to the front of the terminal building, this is probably because the 10 minute free pickup parking area is just 30 metres to the side of the main terminal exit.
