Vauxhall Astra 2.0 DTI fault light ! - krebb industries
On Sunday, i got the fault light on (the one with the spanner, not the ECU one, highlighting a fault with something under the bonnet!). I stoppped the engine and it went out on the restart.

However, on susbsequent starts, the light comes on again but goes off after 30 seconds or so. I had a similar fault with an old Vectra - with the same engine.

There seems to be no symptoms - no jerkier running, no extra smoke, nothing, and is there isn't a murmur or twitch when the light goes off either.

As it goes out after a while - as if something has warmed up - could it be the air mass meter is coming to the end of it's natural ? I gather that it only lasts around 37 months on these, and the car is nearly 48 months old.

And it is due a service too, so a tip off before the garage have a look would be much appreciated.

Could be a duff glowplug, shows up as out of resistance range on start, but wont affect starting until in the cold winter months. A dealer should only charge £25 to £30 to diagnose the fault with a fault reader, if it is a glowplug it is about £20 for the part plus labour. Let us know how you get on

Hadn't thought of that, as there is no problem at all starting. I'd forgotten about them, as with it having a DI engine I haven't seen the glowplug light come on for a while ! Not like my Clio D, when I put the seatbelt on and read the paper whilst the light was on...................

I work shifts and have made early starts in the relative cold. The warning light stays on for much longer in the mornings than on the warmer start when I go home in the afternoon. So a heat related fault would make sense, and the glowplugs sound the most likely culprits.

And relatively cheap to fix too !

Thank you

If the light stays on when for a while cold, then goes our when the car is warm, if you stop the car when warm and switch off, then restart after a few seconds, if the light does not come on I would say definitely a duff glowplug

My 98 Vectra DTI does the same thing. Management light comes on at the first start up in the morning and goes out by the end of the road. If it stands all day it will do the same thing. Had my local garage check it out and his reader gave the fault as "glow device general error".
He thought it was perhaps the glow plugs controller which was faulty.
However decided to leave it until the winter and see if it has any problems starting when its cold.

Further to Ian at the top, I've got the car booked in for a Masterfit service and MOT - £160 here in Rochdale. I told them about the light - "that'll be £60 sir to hook it up to the diagnostics". £60 !!! Seeing as they are servicing it anyway, i thought that they'd just plug it in. Cheeky swines.

I will try my luck at changing the glow plugs myself and see if that cures it.

If it is glow plug related, providing the thing starts and runs smoothly, I can live with the light.

Krebb, Have a read of this one which is very similar to yours.

Thanks a lot - sounds like the same thing. I've not had the air mass meter problem, but the had a V reg vectra DI that supped oil (the dodgy bores) and also the famous "injector seals" air ingress with both the P reg Vectra DI and this Astra DTI (under warranty mind) so I think I've had all the main probs with this engine at one stage or another.

i'll nip to the library, get the Haynes manual and change the glow plugs before next thursday (service and MOT day). As I said, I don't seem to be having any problems - just the light - so I can live with it.

Mind you, winter is coming and I'm a train driver who starts and finishes work at very odd times of the night. It's very cold sometimes when I need to rely on the car..........

Still smarting - £60 for the diagnostic test

What you can do is to disconnect the glow plugs electrical caps, and measure the resistance between the end connection and a good earth point (engine block/battery negative). Carry out the resistance check using a good ohmmeter, if you have a duff glowplug it may show up as a different resistance to the other three. The difference may not be great, i.e. 0.5 ohms for the good glowplugs, and, say 1.0 ohm for the bad one.

May save you changing all 4, but if one is duff the others are probably worth changing as well...

I know the feeling, get off my train at 1.00 am sometimes in the winter and pray the car will start and get me home.

Well, it has passed the smoke bit of the MOT, but they reckon a rear spring has gone and will need to be fixed before it passes. The price for the pair ? £304..........

No bangs, bumps, noises, or any symptoms at all of a problem

Argh !!

As it still starts fine, I will postpone any non urgent work until the finance have recovered.

I know it's been awhile but my Vectra DTI also does this did you ever find out what caused it??
