I have been looking on ebay ect.. for a used RX-8 for a few weeks now, there has been 1 that i like the look of which was 2005 plate 231 bhp with full leather sat nav and skirt kit ect.. which i missed out on ebay and it didint reach its min reserve price.
I have seen it for sale private now for 12,500 which is a very good price,it says that it had been in a accident with a new wing and bonnet but the damage was minimal and all the work was done and now looks like new.
But the only thing putting me off traveling a 100 miles to view it is it states that it is on VCAR hence the price of 12,500.
Could anybody help explain about Vcar ect..

not answering your question, but there was a nightmare story on here about someone who bought an rx8 which had he bought and found out it had a smash Dont recall the outcome, but it sounded expensive.
I like the car, but that engine would really put me off. Can you really trust the owner to have checked the oil every other fillup? A friend of mine was loaned one by his fleet manager when his bmw was off the road. No mention of checking the oil, but he was told "not to rag it". When i spoke to him he thought it was sluggish and slow. After i explained to him that he needs to give it some revs, he was much more impressed! Doesnt mean he looked after it though.

Damaged wing and bonnet would not put a 2005 car on V-car. Must have been a bit more to it than that.
|
There are loads of RX8's on sale - why go for an accident damaged one - £12500 for a 2005 is Very Cheap and probably says more than the admission that it has a new wing & bonnet.

VCAR means it has been written off by the insurance company. This means it was bought as salvage and repaired to an unknown standard. If you really want it, get a proper engineers report. Also expect problems when you try to sell it later on.

Remember also it's a rotary engine. Reliable (I guess) if you follow guidelines but for examples:
- Start an RX-8 and immediately stop it (e.g. forgot something in house) then engine flooded with the petrol needed to start it and unlikely to restart. Fix is a tow to a Mazda garage.
- Stop the RX-8 before the engine warmed up properly then there is a risk of the rotary tips being eaten by the petrol in the engine
As a second hand buy I still think a very good car. But buyers need to know it can have issues due to the Wankel engine.

It was the spec on this car, full leather, sat nav, full skirts which was everything i am looking for,but he rice of somthing like this elsewhere is around the £24,000 mark which a bit out of my price range.
To right a car off that is worth over £20k does say that the damage must have been major to say the least.
Thanks to all who have replied to my 1st post,as i have just joined.
I have a buget of about £15k to hopfully get a fully loaded 231 RX-8, most on ebay never reach there min reserve. Will keep my eyes open and keep looking

A work colleague of mine has an RX-8 and does some fairly outrageous business mileage in the car, ie 25-30K a year. Although everyone else drives diesel Audi's and BMW's, I have to say that apart from the poor fuel consumption, it does seem to be surprisingly trouble free.
|
Yup quite a few within the Dell car park. Apart from the almost embarassing fuel consumption never heard of any problems.

At this price point, ebay is not the only place to look for an RX8 is it? And regardless of how you find it get it fully checked out before parting with cash. Remember there is no protection on cars (of this price anyway) via ebay.
Just looked at Mazda site and you'd get a 2003 model 231PS model with velour seats for about £12-13k. So this one on ebay is probably suspect.

Could very well write it off, if the owner had a new for under 1 year old policy then he'd automatically get a new car irrespective of damage.

LOL! No way. Do you think you'd get a new for the sake of a broken taillight or a dented panel? No, they usually only give a new car if the cost of repair exceeds a (very big) percentage of the cost of a new car - say 50-70%, depending on the company. Believe me, there is no way a newish RX-8 is going to written off for the sake of a wing and bonnet. We would be talking MAJOR damage - if its on VCAR at this age then its been through the mill.
|
MY only thought on the mater is if the car was stolen and the insurer then pay out on the missing vehicle, couple of months later vehicle is found and sold on as salvage by the insurance company with some minor panel damage.
But it still smells fishy.

Yes, that could be right. You'd expect a smashed steering lock and some damage to electrics though. And possibly the car wouldn't have been driven very sympathetically. If it were 4-5 years old and a lot cheaper then it might be worth a gamble, but not at the current age & price.
|
Why do people want to buy smashed up motors at exorbitant prices when there are thousands of genuine pieces of tin out there. You might save a 2k on normal price but you will have thrown 12.5k away.

Many years ago a colleague has his brand new car taken in the Newcastle area 1 week later it was found - bashed & bruised - the bodywork was repaired - most panels apart from the roof IIRC - my colleague was surprised it was repaired.
Bodily the car looked fine (about 4 weeks later) however the mechanicals soon showed up to be suspect and the car was
eventually written off as the car had been thrashed for about 300 miles - may be it ran out of fuel..
Somebody somewhere would buy as a 3/4 month old car - unaware (at that time) of its dark history. The were no Ins write off systems at that time.
