Every single one of the car insurance adverts I've seen lately have promoted their product purely on the basis of how cheap it is. Is this because most people buy the cheapest insurance they can find, regardless of it's features and quality of cover?

What always amuses me is that it's "you could save up to £150 on your car insurance.......but it's more likely to be about a fiver".
I tend to weigh up all the benefits of a policy as the as cheapest always inevitably doesn't include a lot of things (or there are get-out clauses).

Me too. Unfortunately it seems that most insurers won't let you see the full terms of the policy until after you've paid the premium. I'm afraid these tactics don't work with me ~ I want to see what I'm buying before I part with the money.

that is news to me. can you give examples/names of any that you have not been able to find?
not sure whether it is a legal requirement, but i have had no difficulty in finding a copy of a full "specimen" or "sample" policy on the internet for each and every insurer that i have looked at.
on your original point: one of the better insurance cover i have found is that offered by zurich.
the summary of cover is found at
www.zurichinsurance.co.uk/Car/SummaryOfCoverAll.asp
( and for full details they say:
For details of the major exclusions or restrictions which apply to our car insurance cover, please click here and select the relevant cover. The full policy wording and summary of cover can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of the selected page.)

I rang the AA and not only did they say that none of the companies they represented would insure my car "any driver" (which I required) but also they said I would have to pay the premium before I got to see the actual policy and then I would have to cancel the policy if I didn't like it. As a formality they sent me brief details of their cheapest cover (despite the fact that I wasn't looking for just the cheapest cover) but it contained little or no information regarding the terms of the policy. If they couldn't be up-front about the policy then I wasn't interested. I didn't see that I should have to make a great effort to find out the terms. I don't deal with companies which are secretive about their products.

Even if this is the case, don't forget you have a 'cooling-off period' (seven days, IIRC) in which you are entitled to cancel the policy and get a full refund if you find it doesn't meet your needs.
The same applies to loans and investments, by the way.

Yes.
And then complain that;
1) They charge you for every bit of admin
2) The service isn't like it used to be
3) Cover is not as comprehensive
4) Claims are hard work
And then disappear back into their corner bemoaning insurance as "all one big rip-off", presumably on the basis that they got what they paid for, rather than what they wanted.

I found that I could halve my house insurance just by changing companies-I could have paid even less but I hadn't heard of the company with the lowest quote! And then ,two weeks later I made a claim, and yes, they paid up without any questions. And on motor cover, you must look at what is covered-I could get insurance cheaper on one of my cars, from a big company and for less than I now pay,but mine includes annual foreign cover and as I go over to the EU several times a year,if I went to the other one they would charge me for extending my cover each time.

Barclays seem to have a good scam on their current 'beat any quote' ad. I called and it was £100 more than my renewal, I told them and they beat it, I then asked for the quote in wiritng, but conveniently it arrived a day after my renewal date, even though I called a month before. If they have to beat it by too much, don't expect to get cover - they need original proof of your renewal too so there was no way I could have taken advantage of their offer.

I would tend to agree but where is there any evidence to show that if you pay more the service is better?

Whoops, that was meant to be in reply to No FM2R's post.

If you temporarily change from "view flat" to "view threaded" you'll see that it is in reply to his post.
