Need a road legal car for £150, N. West. - Gruffalo
I have a mate up North who's life has been turned upside down lately, lost his house + job + car in the space of 15 days due to a bit of silliness with the ease he could get credit.

He's learnt his lesson but needs a car to be able to get back to working. He's got a bit of cash for the insurance and I've just sent £150 via Western Union to hopefully get him mobile again.

So, where is best for him to look?

Is there an auction on any evenings this week?

Does anybody know if any dealers have some snotty p/x at the back of the compound with a bit of t+t still on it?

He's currently in Warrington but could travel up to an hour to get something, it's been 15 years since I lived up there so I'm a bit out of touch. I've arranged for a tame mechanic to hold his hand so hopefully he won't get his fingers too burnt...

Any ideas?????????

Look on Autotrader (link on the left of the page) - key in any make/any model put in your mate's post code and tell it to list by cheapest first.

There are some obvious typing mistakes eg 52 plates for under £100 but at about page 3 or four you start to get T&T cars for £150 when I put in my Manchester address.

I don't think there are many buys in AutoTrader at £150 as the cost of the ad eats up most of the sale. Try Loot or Ebay or the local free papers.

Your willingness to help out your friend is most laudable.

I do think that £150 is pushing it a bit to find something safe, legal, with a longish MOT and not about to explode. £400-500 is a safer bet.

If funds won't stretch, then a pushbike can be surprisingly economical to run. The health benefits are quite welcome, too. I was forced to give up driving for a while and found that I'd never felt fitter after riding a bike for a year....

A car with MoT is worth of the order of scrap value (if any) plus £30 for each month of ticket, at rock bottom.

As others have said, spending £150 may be a false ecomomy, when for £500 you could get, perhaps, a Cavalier with as much as another five years in it, but nil image.

Id be willing to sell my xantia but i couldnt sell it that cheaply as ive recently spent 250 on it.the mot runs out this month and it will need new front break pads, and a new tire.

180k on the clock, but runs really smooth, ive had it for about 18 months. Had the timing belt and tensions replaced last month at a cost of 250 quid and had a new tire put on. All ive used it for in those 18 months is driving 30 miles each way down the motorway from runcorn to manchester every day.

Ask all your mates, and their mates.

I needed a cheapy, and got a 90G Uno from a mate's mate for £150 with four months MoT and three months tax! Needed £220 to get through the next MoT, but I sold it for £320 a few months later, and reckoned I'd done well.

I bought a D reg Passat from Leominster auctions in 1999 for £110 that had T&T (kept car for 30k trouble-free miles), so auctions or ebay is a good option.

eBay. VW polo Mk ii. Rust free. £150 might get you low mileage fvwsh example... you'll have to pay extra for tax though.
