Noticed to my horror at the weekend that my car tax ran out on 31 March this year. Also realised I had never been issued with a new V5C registration document. Having just rung the DVLA, it seems that "computer said no" to this year's reminder.....
Last year, having received the renewal notice in early March, I renewed my tax on the 15th, the day before the budget. This apparently triggered the DVLA computer to *not* issue me with a renwal notice this year......you couldn't make it up!
So the correct process now is to take the documents and money to the local post office, renew from 1 May, and send the back tax to the local DVLA office. Apparently no DVLA forms are needed. The V5 will then be retained for replacement with a V5C.

I know the earliest renewal date is now the 15th regardless but I seem to recall that at one time you couldn't renew it more than 14 days before the expiry date which would mean earliest renewal 17th for 31st March expiry. When did the DVLA change the rules?

I never got a reminder from the DVLA for my Discovery, also due at the end of March!

I saw Customer Services personified i the local LVLO when I mentioned I hadn't had a renewal for one of the fleet. "We're not required to do it" complete with a sour looked that liquified my pocketed jelly babies. Some serious training needs.

Sending a reminder costs money which presumably is passed on to the motorist, so I'm in favour of no reminders. It's no hardship to occasionally glance at the date on the tax disc. You don't get a reminder when an MOT is due.

No, it's *not* a hardship, but we need some consistency. I don't drive the car in question every day, I have two other cars, and I *did* receive a reminder in March for one of them. It's not easy remembering a once-per-year event!

I have umpteen birthdays to remember but it's never a problem. At the start of every year I put them in my new diary, just like I do with lots of other once-per-year events.

i don't see what the difficulty is: it is easily done on most computers and mobile-phones.

Perhaps that's why they put the expiry date on the VED disc; so that you can occasionally look at it if when you clean the windscreen.

OK guys, I get the message....but in my defence, I blame the driver. Luckily SWMBO doesn't read this forum :-))

I agree, but I currently have a six vehicle collection which makes it difficult to remember 6 times a year events. The other reason is consisitancy as stated. No reminder, period is ok. I was wrong I should have realized the tax disc had run out. No excuse for rude snappy staff though. A lot of my work revolves around customer service, a smile costs nothing. She wouldn't last long working for me.
