Chaps,

My colleague at work came up with a dead good idea for our corporate event (jolly). Going endurance racing!

I know very little about endurance racing. What he means is racing in a normal everyday car round and round a grass track, i.e. how they destroyed the under £1500 coupes on Top Gear.

Does anyone know where this goes on in within a hour of Bristol? I'll do a google myself, i just wondered if anyone knew.

Now the main question for discussion: what is the optimum car for driving around a grass track for a large number of laps with, er, contact. Petrol or Diesel? FWD or RWD? Mondeo or Sierra?

My favourite would be a MkII Granada, but I doubt i'll find one. I have a contender, but i'll keep it under wraps until i get some response.

Budget - as cheap as possible!

TIA

My nephew does grass trials & has won quite a few of them in his VX Nova. He has beat most front & rear wheel drive cars, but has yet to beat his nemisis in a mini. If size isn't an issue try a rwd sierra or if downsizing try a nova or a pug 205 gti.

Ah, a Mondeo. I would pay you to use a one of those. Lets face it, its the only time it's ever going to be an exciting drive! Better still, use a one fitted with the worst diesel engine the worlds ever seen, the 1.8 unit. Although I say it as a joke, the 1.8 Ford diesel probably wouldn't be a bad bet, quite robust to say the least. Provided it doesn't make your ears bleed first, it'll run quite a while with little oil or water in (from the experience of my dads Escort works van anyway) but it probably wont win the race!

On a more serious note, the Granada (Mk1 or 2) isn't a bad choice, its one of the banger racers favorite, along with Cortinas (Mk3>) and Austin Cambridges but all of these are dwindling in number due to such use.

I would imagine it would be beneficial to use something larger, so anything Escort sized downwards is a no no. How about a Passat? What?s the car you hold a grudge against? You might find you'll get more fun out of a car you hate.

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun, hope you enjoy it.

Unfortunately, the budget doesn't run to a Mercedes C Coupe thing. Nice thought though!

Something similar happens at Rooksbridge on the A38 just north of where it crosses the M5.

Brillant, thanks Cheddar. Any recommendation for a car?

If its going to end up being a demolition derby, what about an old Volvo with the best engine you can find, ie. 245 with a 2.8 V6, or a 760 turbo.
My mate had a 240 estate which we had a bad crash in (into a ditch at 50mph), but the next day it still ran okay and we had a load of fun thrashing it sideways round his field. The bumpers are like RSJ's and I'm sure the body panels are thicker steel than on other cars...

Rich, you're a man after my own heart....

In the absence of 2.8 MkII Granadas, the favourite was a 740 / 960 Volvo. However i have an option on a surefire winner:

A E reg Saab 900 2dr. And the current owner's quite happy for it to go out in a blaze of glory!

Mare, your proposed race sounds like it will be the best fun you can have on 4 wheels, I am most jealous, keep us posted how it goes!
The Saab sounds like a good bet too - with the solid bumpers in the old Volvo style!...

My first car after Uni was an old Audi 80 quattro, when it finally died (wheel came off when driving home from work), I got it bodge-fixed and ended up selling it spares/repair. I was wanting to take it banger racing, but they wouldnt allow it because it was 4 wheel drive. The traction could have been an unfair advantage on the muddy track, but I dont think it would have taken a lot of crash damage in the condition it was in!
