Punto ELX Speedgear Bad Timing and Idle - geebee

Hi all, hope someone can help here.
My wifes Fiat Punto (2001 ELX Speedgear) has developed a really bad idling and timing problem, which is severly affecting her using it. It starts fine,although it rattles a bit and is a little noisy, but this is a common Punto problem apparently...however after a little while, maybe a mile or so, the engine starts hesitating and juddering quite badly...like a misfire or something...when idling in neutral its not too bad but certainly not right, but as soon as you pull away it almost stalls and just about keeps going, but very hesitantly and juddery...if you try and accelerate more its worse. Its only actually properly stalled once, but seems like its always going to. Hope someone can maybe shed a little light on what the problem might be. Thanks v.much in advance.
