Car wash etiquette - frazerjp
When going for a car wash at a filling station: Is it respectful to park your car on the forecourt before you go in to pay at the kiosk?
Or park your car in the queue then pay at the kiosk & annoy the bloke who payed in front of you who ends up queueing behind you?

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

i like this question as at my local garage both are enacted which annoys equal people in equal amounts,i have learnt to queue pay and then move forward.

I would have thought it would be courteouse to park on the forecourt so the next driver can go through. I must admit I have not used a carwash for the past 3 years after my then car was severly scrated by the brushes. Far easyer to wash yourself unless of courese its a company vehicle.
Car wash etiquette - Aretas
Why would you treat a company car any different to one you own? Surley anyone's property should be looked after. And I speak as one who was lucky enough to run a company car for 15 years.

Park on forecourt out of the way and go inside to pay. Why block/hold up a pump when you don't need fuel??. If someone is in the pump queue waiting for the car wash only and gives you evils because you cut in front of them, give them the stink eye back for being so inconsiderate of those needing fuel.
Car wash etiquette - Mr Hula
I tend to agree. You should park somewhere unobtrusive, pay, and then go to queue for the wash. The reason I know this to be the correct way is because when I do that, I never feel guilty.

When I'm in a rush and I park in the wash and THEN go to the kiosk to pay, I always say a little prayer that there will be no one waiting behind me that has already paid. I know if there is I will have to run the gauntlet of their angry glare and slip guiltily into my car.

Remember sometime ago a driver was slightly annoyed after buying his token and someone drove his Jaguar XJS to the car wash and then obtained his token. Unfortunately he was the first car of the day and overnight some toe rags had attached nuts to the brushes and the Jaguar's paintwork was shredded.

Simple lesson - never be the first one to use a car wash in the morning.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

I don't bother with car-washes, as they damage the paintwork eventually and only do half a job !
Car wash etiquette - Andrew-T
Spot on, Roly. The only time I have used a carwash was last year in NZ, just before returning a rental car which was covered in filth after 2 weeks touring. The cashier then said 'oh you needn't have bothered ...'. If you DIY, at least you don't need to blame anyone for any damage.

Dont know.Never used a car wash in 25 years of driving.

If not using a car wash was considered akin to achieving motoring nirvana I would still go down to my local one every week in the winter months (if I don't,I can't see out the side windows after 2 weeks) as when you do a high mileage a couple of quid sure beats wasting a Sunday morning washing in the cold.
Thats if I can get parked close enough to my home

It reaks of a lack of anything else to do if you feel a sense of pride in not going to a car wash

Back on tack though, I always pull up, purchase ticket and then proceed to car wash facility

The people that annoy me are the ones that pay more for the hairdryer,it takes so long sometimes I've finished the paper

I'm going for a cigarette now

When I can't see through the windows, or the grandnippers want a bit of fairground fun, I put the car through the carwash. It doesn't get all the dirt off the car but it does mean you can see through the windows. It would be far more sensible to wash them, or indeed the whole thing, by hand but I can't be bothered.

It could do with a polish and a bit of touching up here and there too. Might get round to it but probably not.

Thames water are imposing a hosepipe ban from the 3rd April, so presumably this'll affect the use of car washes as well.

Therefore, no quibbling about car wash etiquette will be neccessary ;o)

The time i went to the car wash before writing this topic was because my jet wash at home has stopped working & my Ka hadnt been washed in weeks so..... there you go.

Yeah, I had a problem with "car wash etiquette" last week. Went to Tesco's in prestwich, plain and simply for a car wash after work as the car was looking seriously filthy. Parked up out of the way and got my car wash code, came out and went to drive round to the car wash lane but somebody had just parked up a big blinged up Impretza in lane for the wash. I waited for the guy to come out a couple of minutes later, got out my car and asked him why he parked there?, he told me he was using the car wash and "didn't want anyone to take his place!!" at this point I lost it and basically told him to move his chav car or me and him would be having an inncident... the cheek of some people!! :)

I hate automatic car wash machines and never use them. They gradually take the lacquer finish off the paintwork.
I will pay for a hand car wash, but I feel guilty getting three or four young lads fearfully cold and wet in the current climate.
Costs £3.00 to £4.00 round here, and is generally thorough, including the alloys, and door shuts. I never have the wax, since it pink fluffy dice up the windscreen for weeks.

Iam on a water meter,so I pay for every drop of water I use.I will stop using my hosepipe when Thames water fix their 33% water loss through leakage.

Or until a neighbour reports you! Regarding the alleged 33% water loss there is doubtless a level of leakage below which it is not economical to investigate and repair. If all leaks were repaired you would be charged even more.

I was reading the other day that the penalty for using the hosepipe through a ban was something pretty draconian. Does anyone know for sure?

I must have been reading the wrong thing then.

I thought it might have been prison. Am I glad I never mentioned that! I would have looked a right fool.

It depends whether you are big enough and tough enough to get away with dissing everyone else!

There used to be a car wash near me that employed young ladies in tight tee shirts to dry off the car afterwards. It was well worth the cost of the car wash to watch one of them polishing your windscreen.

I don't know if the same thing applies elsewhere but the local supermarket down here in Sussex has a huge carpark and a gang of Eastern Europeans under a gangmaster. They wash the car for a fiver.

They do quite a good job, better than a carwash but I reckon the workers are pretty exploited, all the money is paid to the boss -
although I usually give the washer a tip as well if the job has been done well.

A year or so back a couple of the car cleaners fell out ( in the car park ) and one was murdered by the other - needless to say I never forget to pay before driving off just in case .....

Not sainsburys in chichester by any chance? The guys in the carpark there always do a good job, though they seem to use a very small amount of water. (hadn't read about the murder incident though, so I might be in the wrong location completely!)
Car wash etiquette - helicopter
The murder was actually actually near where I lived in Surrey until recently at Reigate Safeways ( now Morrisons ).

I now am dragged screaming to a Sainsburys in West Sussex ( not Chichester ) but the same east european immigrant types are doing the washing and the same grasping type gangmaster taking the money.
Car wash etiquette - Dynamic Dave
If there is a hosepipe ban, does washing and rinsing your car with a bucket or two of water also count?
Car wash etiquette - helicopter
I think not Dave - if it does I have been breaking the law for the past year because we have had a hosepipe ban in place for over a year in our area of West Sussex.I have both pressure washer and hosepipe which have been unused over that time but I still use a watering can - it just takes me a lot longer than using a hose.

I make sure that any water left ( not the soapy stuff) that has been used in washing or rinsing the car is used in the garden.

When I consider the actual value of all the trees plants and shrubs in my garden , I feel that I should be suing the water company for failing to provide me with the water that I am paying them a handsome sum to provide.

Do not be fooled by this drought rubbish that they are putting about The drain on potable water supplies is increasing all the time because we have built too many houses in the south east, the water companies have shamefully neglected the upkeep of their pipelines and expect the public milchcow to provide for them whilst losing a third of the water in leaks.

Just off to bed with my calming down pill and some Ovaltine .....
