One option you may have is a cheap aftermarket mirror that may be affixed minimising damage to bodywork.

If it's an obligatory mirror (ie, factory fitted) then it is subject to an MOT inspection. www.motuk.co.uk/manual_810.htm

Indeed, but, in a passenger car, you don't need a passenger side mirror if you have the interior mirror or the offside mirror.
So, for example, our old Escort did pass an MOT without an interior mirror (it had dropped off shortly before the test - I did stick it back on later!) because it had an offside and nearside exterior mirror.

Thanks again for all the helpful comments. Followed up your various leads. Have ordered a mirror from twostroke.co.uk, as suggested by Mike, for the grand sum of £60 including postage. They were extremely efficient and helpful ensuring it is from the same model and age and includes electrics. Beats £250 from other sources and the logistics of going round scrap yards.
Reading the motuk site I also think she does not need to panic but will be happier with the car complete!

Just to add - ordered part yesterday, arrived this morning first thing. What service!
Relative has taken print-out re mirror into local MOT centre so they know for next time!
