Pug 307 rear pad renewal - autumnboy
I want to renew the rear disc pads on a Pug 307.

But how do you reset the piston in the caliper to allow the new pads. The piston will rotate and the Handbrake lever, guide pins and cable are free. But cannot push the piston back as you would on a front caliper.

Also there is a slight bind on both the rear disc's, not enough to hold on slight incline, but hard to turn the disc without the wheel fitted. Is this normal on these or a fault within the caliper.

thanks

sounds like the pistons are a bit siezed in the barrels -

no faults there! its a wind back caliper you need the tool that fits in the caliper and wind it in,you can do it with a big pair of mole grips to turn it and water pump pliers to push it in but it's a bind!! as for the binding fit the rear pads clean up the discs first or better still replace them.

If the pistons have to be wound back, are the threads left and right hand depending on which side, and which way have they have to be turned to go back.

I use an old type lever or a large flat blade screwdriver to fit in the caliper slot. Just turn till they go back, you will soon see if you are turning the right way. You have to make sure that the protrusion on the pad engages with the caliper slot.

it's been a while but i think its left hand or anti-clockwise.
but you will see it will start to go back into place, when you have fitted them just pump the pedal it will wind out to suit.

Thanks all, for your tips.

Did one recently. Amazed how thin the new pads were! Clockwise rotation to reset the pistons, open the bleed nipple to allow the displaced fluid to bleed away rather than going the 'wrong' way back through the system, squirt a little WD40 onto the bellows to stop it winding up as you wind the piston in. Dont operate the handbrake until after you have pumped the pistons out again onto the new pads. When you DO pump the pistons out DONT push the pedal to the floor, rather give several short pumps. This is because if you force the piston in the master cylinder past where it normally operates you could damage the seals if there is any crud theirin.
Good luck
Andrew
